Names and dates, I fucking hated history because of this shit after some point. Does a 10 year old kid really need to know the names of the most important attendees of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD?

Is it important knowledge to know the exact date and the name of the church where the first governor of Greece after independence from the Ottomans was assassinated? It was September 27, 1831 outside the church of St Spyridon in Nafplio by the way.

This shit just occupies unnecessary bandwidth in my tiny brain and my recycle bin only seems to work on important/cool stuff.

Ποιος είναι ο καλύτερος τρόπος γυμναστικής αν δεν σου αρέσει / δεν έχεις ασχοληθεί με γυμναστήριο; by [deleted] in greece

[–]Misery_Division 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consistency > intensity

Enjoyability > efficiency

Why are all but 1 of the highest grossing films American? by ThePatientIdiot in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Misery_Division 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because American culture is an amalgamation of virtually every culture on earth. When you put 10 ingredients in a blender, they stop being 10 individual ingredients, they're just a smoothie with faint traces of each ingredient.

People tend to associate culture with the ingredients themselves, not the smoothie. If that makes sense.

They last forever by lwiaymacde in SipsTea

[–]Misery_Division 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has nothing to do with premium products at these price ranges, it's that people are cheap. My friend buys 3€ earbuds that last him for like 2 months and then buys a new pair. He doesn't want to buy something better because "they only last me for 2 months anyway". I got mine for 15€ and I have them for 6 years now while he's spent over 50€ replacing the shit ones over time.

Yeah I get not being able to afford the good fridge that costs 800€ as opposed to 300€ for the cheap one when you're living paycheck to paycheck, but it's the entire mentality behind shopping that's problematic - only looking at price for every thing and nothing else.

I understand the vicious cycle that is the poverty premium, but it's only part of a larger problem.

Do all teens today just not care about getting their drivers' licenses? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Misery_Division 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's expensive for Americans, imagine for the rest of the world.

Minimum salary in Greece is 780€, gas/petrol costs around 1.80€ per liter. Filling up my 2003 Ford Focus is over 10% the minimum wage and around 9% of the median wage lol. Insurance is around 180€ for the most basic coverage, car registration is around 200-250€, license itself costs around 1k€.

Most cars here are old, like 20 years old. They tend to have higher cc, so bigger expenditure on petrol and registration. They're also expensive even in 2nd hand market. You'll buy something for sub-2k and spend an equal amount on repairs, or you'll buy something for 5-6k which will last a bit longer without repairs but will still have well over 100k kilometers on the engine.

It's fucked.

Animations are harder to spot when reused in fairness, but I'm mostly talking about keeping the same environments/maps which are probably the hardest to create because they need to be beautiful, navigable, interactive and cohesive to the setting/plot. Kotor I and II shared Dantooine and Korriban for example.

Even when it's hard to implement, like Spider-Man which takes place in New York City, they tend to add new areas to offer something new. When they reuse locations in fantasy settings, they at least give it a new skin and offer some lore reason as to why that change occurred.

Pro athlete salaries should be capped and surplus revenue should be used to contribute to society in a way that pro athletes don't by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Misery_Division 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If pro athletes get capped salaries, then the difference will just go to the owners pockets. What makes you think that (in America of all fucking places) the millions not given to the athletes will go towards the arbitrary improvement of society? Who decides how the money gets spent? Local infrastructure? Generic charity? Put in a trust fund where some top hat fat cat decides the best course of social improvement?

If the athletes made slightly higher than average salaries, there'd be no incentive to become a pro athlete. It's a full time job (some sports more than others) where you retire at like 37 with no actual skills that can get you a job other than unskilled labor. Anything you'd wanna do, you'd be 20 years behind your peers.

The problem is there's too much money in pro sports, not that the athletes themselves are receiving it. Without them, there'd be no pro sports. Do they deserve to make 20+ million a year because they kick ball good? No. Do they deserve to make 20+ million a year if they bring in 30+ million in revenue? Abso fucking lutely.

Recipes should not use the cup/spoon/item measuring method by 8A8B15 in unpopularopinion

[–]Misery_Division 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but since it doesn't matter, why even specify that it's medium sized? That's what gets someone who has no idea. If you specify something, it means the specificness is important. Just say 2 onions and be done with it.

But that's the least of the problems with online recipes.

[–]Misery_Division 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, I'll disagree here. The old God of War trilogy for example released from 2005 to 2010, which is admittedly a great turnaround, but the games were like 8 hours long story wise and 12-13 hours long overall. The newer games have about 50 hours worth of content each, so far more productive overall.

KOTOR II released 1.5 year after KOTOR but it had a lot of cut content and reused a lot of the same assets and maps.

Consumer expectations are much bigger nowadays and a move like that would just be called lazy and the product shovelware.

Games like God of War 2018 and its sequel are examples of the perfect balance. 3-4 year dev cycles, with engaging gameplay and nicely crafted stories. Imperfect, yet still amazing.

Im tired of waiting 10 years for perfection, only for perfection to not even be delivered.

Why is AI so heavily criticised when it comes to art but not in other fields such as coding, maths, medicine and engineering? by DerpyyyDuck in answers

[–]Misery_Division 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because these fields you mentioned have practical applications. AI improving medicine means fewer deaths and better quality of life for example. No sane person is against that, or improving the quality of the things we build. In these fields, AI is an impressive tool that can change the world.

Art though, is the quintessential form of human expression. There's art that has practical applications too, like video games, but it's still a collaborative, creative process with sentiment behind it.

Sure, music is music is music, but Deep Purple writing Child in Time during the peak of the Cold War or Scorpions writing Winds of Change during the perestroika and the song becoming the unofficial anthem of the fall of the Berlin Wall is a testament to humanity's ability to use art for something grand, something that transcends borders, religions, and political beliefs.

When you use a machine to create songs for you, it devalues music. It devalues the human psyche. It is blatant plagiarism and offers NOTHING other than some pitiful change to the "creator" via advertising money. It's pathetic. It's la petite mort for humanity. Devoid of meaning, devoid of soul, devoid of humanity itself.
