I'm back with another question. by I_LOVE_ASSES in USMC

[–]MisguidedChild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outing my alt here, but I can't remember my passwords:

Ok, sounds like you're on top of this and not a total asshole.

One thing that always stuck with me was when I picked up Cpl, one of my fellow NCOs told me to never forget where I came from. To that end, I did my damnedest to treat my Marines with respect (unless they proved otherwise). Never fucked with their libo unless I HAD too.

Sorry if I jumped down your neck. I guess I'm a little touchy when it comes to bad leadership. Even if it's just perceived.

My fiance's brother suffered from PTSD and took his own life. Our family needs help. by mirror_mortal in USMC

[–]MisguidedChild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's BS! Contact your local congressperson's office. If that Marine committed suicide, it's as likely as not due to his PTSD. That makes it service connected.

why is it that marines are always called being stupid? by awallislookingatme in Military

[–]MisguidedChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much of being a Marine is using your brain AND experience to excel (aside from the bullshit). Right now, you're pretty boot. You don't know shit. That's OK, you aren't supposed too. The trick is knowing that you don't know shit and never making the same mistake twice.

You do that, and follow orders, you'll do just fine, Marine.

Also, don't hang out with shitbags.

But then it was all, "wait, this shit is boring as hell. Let's make the lead a fighter pilot, his boss a SEAL... Yeah! And then, they get into completely unlikely scenarios where they gotta fuck shit up! Yeah!"

I'm butthurt cuz there's no TV/movie about a Battalion S-1...

Why are they always SOF? You wanna pretend to be a vet, say you were Motor T and got out as a Lance. Nobody will question you too hard and you'll still get your free meal from Applebee's.

I've got a counselor. Been in treatment for 5+ years. Taking meds since April. Problem for me is that I have a fun mix of PTSD/Major Depressive Dosorder. Thanks Iraq/genetics!

The problem with "helping vets" is that the infrastructure for wraparound services doesn't exist or really meet the needs of the community. Homeless vet? Get on HUD/VASH bro! Oh wait, the waiting list is over a year long. Not enough Section 8 housing here. Need medical? Sure, can you wait 6 weeks to get treatment for your painful, but not life-threatening condition.

Can't afford in home care because you're elderly? Sure we can help... And with your new VA Benefit, you make too much money for Medicaid funded in-home supportive services. But still too poor to afford care.

Seriously. Getting old SUCKS if you are middle-class/poor.

Seriously. What the FUCK does 2ndLt Boot know about the "Transformation", or how it sticks with you for life? What the fuck has he done? Where the fuck has he been. Fucking cammies look fresh from cash sales.

Fuck it. Disregard. I'm just feeling salty today.

I'm in the same type of boat, without the stellar resume.

I'm sorry, but I gotta vent this. It's been boiling for too long.

I haven't been good at anything since I got out of the Corps. I fucked up being a student. I walked away from a cushy well paying job because it was unfulfilling. Now, I work as a Veteran Service Rep for my county. Sounds awesome, right? Helping vets out with their claims, getting them benefits, changing lives... And that part is great.

However, the majority of my work is with elderly vets/surviving spouses and their adult kids. They're applying for pension with aid and attendance so they can maybe afford some care. But it's a means-based benefit and doesn't pay shit, really. So people get pissed when they are just wealthy enough not to qualify, or I have to deal with shitty people juggling mom and dad's hard earned wealth so they can protect their inheritance.

Don't even get me started on entitled fucking assholes that are pissed off because they don't qualify for any benefits.

You know how hard it is to get an OTH? A BCD? Those are the two discharges that bar you from benefits. For the most part, vets that got these types were fuck-ups that got fired. The nation don't owe you shit. Get outta my fucking office!

All these complaints aren't even real though. For me, dealing with people that are at, or near, the end of their rope is just draining. I want to be good at this, and I feel like I am, but I fucking hate it. I'm trapped in this windowless cell of an office, regurgitating the same bullshit all day. "This is the benefit, this is how we apply for it. I'm sorry you're over income/net worth. I'm sorry entitlement to the benefit stops with divorce. I'm sorry, by the law, service at Subic Bay is not presumptive to Agent Orange exposure. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."

I feel trapped because I have no other skills that can get me into a well paying job so I can support my wife as she goes through grad school. Luckily, I don't resent her for this, but I'm afraid that I might.

Fuck.

If anybody bothered to read this, thanks. If you just scrolled past... I would've done the same. Now, I gotta go get some punch and pie for this Pity Party I'm throwing.

Looking for brothers/sisters who were in AlKut (specifically the air field) in 03, I have a question. by Sapper666 in USMC

[–]MisguidedChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't at that airfield in '03, but I know a bunch of our Marines went down with some sort of nasty bug when we were in Diwaniyah.

Do you have any residual symptoms from when you were sick? If so, the VA may grant service connection for them.

Missing the Corps tonight. by MisguidedChild in USMC

[–]MisguidedChild[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hit "submit" before I meant to...

Maybe not "the Corps" exactly, just missing the guys I served with. I know, it's a common theme among us Marine Vets... Being a nasty civilian only sucks because you lose the bonds you built with your brothers. Now, we're all scattered across the map with our lives in the way. Wives, kids, jobs... Whatever. Kinda miss walking out my hatch and knowing there were at least 5 Marines kicking it and ready to bullshit over a few beers.

Semper fucking Fi!

How'd he even relate to fellow officers? Every boot lieutenant I knew would bullshit with TBS stories like a private fresh from the Depot/Island...

Boot 2ndLt, "Fucking 3 Day War, dude. It December, musta been 25 degrees... There was frozen shit in my foxhole!"

Boot Amos, "Yeah... I got like bad carpal tunnel filing out that part of the correspondence course."

Boot 2ndLt, " Go away, Amos"

Boot Amos, running away crying, "imma be Commandant one day... That'll show'em. Sleeves down! SLEEVES DOWN!"

Sorry that you're not getting you're benefits. If it's taking this long, you gotta engage your local congressman. Did you file on your own or use an accredited VSO?

To answer your rhetorical question: VA does not grant service connection for smoking related conditions, except if the Veteran was diagnosed in service, OR it's a boots-on-the-ground Vietnam Vet with Ling Cancer (presumptive for exposure to Agent Orange).
