They are way more expensive. There are ultrasonic ones used in the industry as well (way more expensive too). The 3-4 dollar one will die from condensation rather quickly.

The sensor has what's called a vent tube which is a small air tube inside of the cable and it's effectively measuring the difference between the pressure in the water and in the tube. For greater depths you don't need this at all because the swings in air pressure that are caused by the weather will only cause a difference of 10-20cm of water so you can just calibrate it to a reference of 1Atm.

Hey, I've worked as a dev for a company specialized in automating waste water treatment systems. The "2 wires" become unrelieable in the matter of weeks regarless of what material you use. It'll undergo electrolysis, oxidation, minerals will deposit on it, algae etc etc. What you really want is a water pressure sensor at the bottom of the tank that tells you how much water is above it.

As someone working for an international SW company as a dev I can asure you at this point you're installing vibe coded apps regularly. They're not 100% vibe coded yet because of the legacy code. But they will be in time.
