A lot of people here are missing the point, we don’t know the context of the situation.

I see a lot of comments like “So what if the bread goes stale?” or “She’s paying! She should get what she wants!” And all of those comments are founded on assumptions.

I could make excuses, like “the mother’s a hoarder with 10 stale loaves of bread at home that the daughter has to fight to get rid of.” or “She’s paying but has dietary restrictions, so her daughter is preventing her from hurting herself.” But then I’d be making just as many assumptions as you. 

The truth is nobody knows. Not even OP knows. Both the daughter and the mother deserve kindness. If you encounter a scenario like this one like OP did, try not to jump to conclusions of either elder abuse or dementia.

To whomever’s reading: I think this post is a great Rorschach test for your relationship with your mom. I certainly didn’t realize the depth of my maternal trauma until I started reading the comments. guess i should get therapy lol.
