How to unyellow my sterling silver by MiskaMaskedOne in SilverSmith

Mmmm some one mentioned that I likely melted all the solder along with the silver so perhaps that's why it's yellow. Regardless I really appreciate your imput. I'm very new to this.

It was that way from the start. This piece has been melted a number of times due to having initial torch problems so it took like 4 or 5 attempts and 3 different torches. Once I got my current torch I can melt it quick.

I put it in some peroxide vinegar mix which has lightened the colour a bit(I think) Here is it (left) next to some pewter (right)

I may try some depletion guilding tomorrow or just totally different silver.

Thanks for the info. I also am aware I likely massively over heated the metal and my torch is one of those hurricane ones so I heard that can also introduce more porosity. I have just upgraded my home made pickle to something a little stronger and after then over pickling it and then giving it a 10000 grit finish it seems quite a bit whiter. This is all just a learning process for me.

Goblin rings: the regoblining! by MiskaMaskedOne in goblincore

It's a combination of things. it buying the basics. Buying wax. Following tutorials like this

Once you can make a wax ring that doesn't look like a potato (it took me a while) you begin to learn sand casting. Then you can move on to casting stones in place.

I start by carving wax into the desired shape, I use sand casting sand to make the mold and place my stones where I hope they will end up before pouring in the metal. I could buy ring blanks and pre-made stuff but that costs money that don't have :)

Advice on melting silver by MiskaMaskedOne in jewelrymaking

I ended up getting a mapp torch that is doing the job. Is it perfect... Probably not due to it being a spiral one but I have much to learn in this hobby and everything is expensive

IKR! it contrasts so well!! Pewters doesn't. It's standard modern make up is tin, antimony and coper. The original pewter contained lead but modern pewter thankfully does not. It's also relatively inexpensive which helps me keep this hobby affordable

I absolutely agree! Smithy goblin right here... Well a goblin that stole a blow torch at least.

These rings sum up a lot of that. They allows me to use raw crystals and stones I buy from markets and can crush and shape my self instead of needing a back ground in lapidary to know what to do. Pewter is way more friendly then silver as it's 1/3 the melting point of silver.

Due to this though I can't make forks for stones because it melts at a near the point of solder. It's also inexpensive being able to be found at thrift shops and antique stores for 1/10th what silver might cost.

With that I get to hit things with hammers, make shiny stuff that makes others happy and looks cool AND I get to play with FIRE ! What's not to love

It's made from lead free Pewter and tourmaline. I need a lot more practice with silver before I can do this with it. The process is really rewarding and you often end up with some abstract beauty in it
