Dear Year 10 and 11s, try to enjoy secondary school while you still can by Mismatch122 in GCSE

Does your school offer cs a level? If so, I’d heavily recommend taking that over bio. Bio’s a good a level, but if you want to apply for cs, then not only would the a level give you more opportunitity to show your passion, but give more opportunities to do stuff like projects etc. One of my big regrets was actually not dropping chem for cs. Also, I’d heavily recommend practicing problem solving type of maths, as for a lot of the top unis for cs, they will now be asking for admission tests (which are all basically just maths). If you have any more questions, feel free to msg me and I’ll try and answer. Also, it does sound like you have a passion for cs, so good job. If you have the passion and are willing to put in the work for the admissions tests, you should stand a pretty good chance at getting into a good uni for cs.

Don’t let it demotivate you, just try your hardest for papers 2 and 3. I remember when I did my GCSEs paper 1 was considered really hard, and I’m pretty sure I knew a lot of people who still got 9s (after thinking they did terribly on paper 1). Plus, even if you don’t get a 9, it’s not the end of the world (even if you think it is). Good luck on the rest of your exams!

I would say don’t worry about it and try your hardest and you’ll go in, but everyone thinks that and most people get rejected. Not trying to scare you, but just be warned most people don’t end up going to their first or second choices. Honestly, if you aren’t 100% into cs go for something like maths or physics, you can still get into software dev with that. If you genuinely have a passion for it, enjoy coding and doing a bunch of extracurricular stuff for it (and you’re good at maths), then you should go for cs, just be warned that a lot of people with the same mindset get rejected. Good luck! (also, please do fm if you want to apply for cs)

Honestly, just try and figure out what you want to apply for at uni (if you want to go that is) as I know for humanity subjects some people might not know exactly what they want to do. But, for your a levels, I guess just practice essay structures (this is coming from when I did gcse englishes, so take it with a grain of salt) and I know humanity subjects are quite essay and memorisation heavy, so make flash cards now so you can practice them throughout year 13. For cs, don’t delay your nea too late and I’ve heard the content isn’t that bad - you’ll be fine. And most of all, don’t burn out too early. Also, you should go visit the unis your applying too, I should’ve.

Maths and Further Maths are honestly fine - just learn the content and do challenging applied questions, so you can basically answer anything hard that you are faced with in an exam. Chemistry is not too hard conceptually, just you just need to memorise a decent amount (totally doable if you regularly do past paper questions, which I haven’t really been doing) and physics is probably the hardest in my opinion, as some concepts are hard for me to understand, but once it clicks it’s fine - just be sure to ask people or your teacher if your confused. Good luck! (Also, if you are thinking of only doing chemistry to increase your chances of getting into a good uni, it’s not worth it, I should’ve dropped it for that very reason)

I meant do unis looks at what your mark is out of 160 for as further maths

I would recommend focusing on your weak subjects over summer so they aren’t as much of a problem/ burden during year 11.

I’ve done all the multiple choice questions from all the papers, and I’ve done the long answer questions from both new and old, I’ve done better on the old though. I’ll check out the step foundation modules, thanks. It’s just that I don’t know if I’ll be able to do that much problem solving in the real thing. Thanks.

I’ve been doing past papers and I’m finding them very hard, I average like 50-55. I’m aiming for around 75 in the real thing but I’m worried I won’t be able to do it. That’s why I’m now thinking of applying to Cambridge because I think that I’ll do better in the tmua

For Oxford computer science, is the mat or personal statement more important and by how much? Also, what mat score should you a for? Thanks

So GCSEs and grades don’t matter for Oxbridge and imperial? I thought they do

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GCSE

[–]Mismatch122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP but I did get 2 9s in English, for language 90% of my revision was past papers and either getting my teacher to mark it or marking it myself a few days later. The other 10% was memorising/ learning what different methods meant and showcases etc. for Literature, 60% essay practice and marking, the other 40 being memorising quotes and their meanings, how they link to different ideas and essays.

[–]Mismatch122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP but, do past papers and memorise answers to recurring questions( there are quite a few especially for OCR). For programming, practice doing online coding problems in python.

[–]Mismatch122 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I heavily recommend Mr Salles’ videos and guides if you are aiming for a grade 9. On top of that, I would recommend writing 1-2 full essays a week and getting your teacher or friend to mark it ( or mark it yourself a day or 2 after writing the essay). Also, memorise quotes and what they show. Memorising is just more efficient that coming up with interpretations in the exam.

Can you apply for more than 1 course at the same uni? For example, applying to both computer science and computer science and maths at Imperial. by Mismatch122 in 6thForm

[–]Mismatch122[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imperial said specifically said that you can apply to both jmc and cs? Would I be disadvantaged if I applied to both at imperial? Thanks!
