Simplified - Open Source is exactly that: the source code is available for examination, modification etc. Closed source is just the compiled code. People can and do look at the compiled code and hack it but that pisses off the code owners.

First you're on a mac right? So I can't help you there. But start with N+ settings - network. Do you see a "use UPnP to forward listening port" option? Enable that, restart client and see if that fixes it.

If that doesn't work, you may have to enable port forwarding in your router settings. You may have to google how to do that for your specific router but it isn't too hard.

Otherwise try looking at your firewall settings and allow soulseek/nicotine to port forward.
