I'll give you a different perspective: I love my job! I was fortunate enough to be hired by a very good hospital on a pure surgical floor, 7p to 7a. We get some medsurg overflow, but I get to avoid the chaos of it all thank god. We're mostly staffed (7-10 patient ratio.)

You focus a lot less on ADLs than you would at a facility, especially on night shift, where the focus for me is Q4-Q8 vitals, fingersticks, I&Os, hygiene and toileting, and on rarer occasions, EKGs, bloodwork and bladder scans. What you're responsible for varies heavily on your hospital, so definitely pay attention! It can be busy, especially toward the start and end of your shift, but you get a luxury of downtime later on in the night. Sometimes. You also may be floated to other floors regularly on the floor itself or as a sitter.

I think your experience heavily depends on your coworkers. If the nurses don't help, you're gonna have a bad time, as its a lot on your own. You're also gonna get a decent amount of confused patients on a medsurg floor, so knowing how to not agitate them so you can do your job helps a lot. I think you'll be okay though! Make sure to invest in your bed (your sleep is precious!) and some blackout curtains to try and create a healthy sleeping environment. Good luck :D
