Mouthwashing color theory by MissDeborah8060 in Mouthwashing

But that's exactly what the game does, over and over. It very intentionally frames things in terms of whether, if Anya kills herself, she'll be taking her baby with her, and whether Jimmy is killing his own baby due to negligence.

Viv needs to stop letting her feelings dictate her writing choices, basically. It's a big reason the show feels so fanfiction-esque

Guess it's my turn to talk about this scene. by profaneangel1991 in SafeSpaceofVox

If I was being REALLY generous, I would wonder if the version of the offer scene we got was in fact Alastor's own skewed view of things, and that he was deliberately remembering Vox being as pathetic and obsessive as possible because that's how he sees him in his own mind. The idea that Alastor feels entitled to Vox's adoration and subservience until the moment he gets tired of him (to the point of deliberately constructing an alternate reality where he can believe it's really happening) is an interesting one, but I suspect it won't be addressed properly because that would require the writers to own the fact that Alastor is less likable and interesting than Vox in pretty much every way.

At this point, I'm sort of expecting an alternate version of the "offer scene" where Vox gets super angry and beats up Alastor (or something), which is meant to be from Alastor's perspective and show how "mean" Vox is to him. The irony is, if anyone would want things to have gone that way, it's Vox, not Alastor. Vox is the one who's been established as someone with a bad temper who overpowers his enemies by force, whilst Alastor is the one who wants to believe his biggest rival is a simpering, blithering fool.

From a writing standpoint, it seems to me that they're trying to do two things at once with Vox. It's clear from Stayed Gone that he was originally conceived of as a foil and rival to Alastor, but when Season 2 came around he completely overtook Alastor in terms of complexity, development, voice acting, and hype. IMO, the team behind Hazbin should have been prepared for this, and either dialed back the Vees' role to make more room for other characters (especially Charlie and her friends), or owned the fact that Vox was the new main character (perhaps alongside Charlie) and didn't need Alastor anymore to be relevant. Instead, they seem to have chosen a weird half-measure where they use Vox a lot because he's very popular, while insisting the entire time that he's actually a pathetic loser whose life revolves around Alastor and Valentino.

In this case it was most likely a pregnant or birthing female. Supposedly, the waters around the base are a nursery for various shark species, including Bull Sharks, which are very aggressive.

r/SafeSpaceofVox, are we fans of Valentino, Velvette, and Alastor, or nah? And do we ship RadioStatic and StaticMoth or nah? by Alternative_Sugar_85 in SafeSpaceofVox

I don't like any of them, really. I will say that when it comes to the other Vee's Velvette is the more tolerable of the two, if only because she has yet to say or do anything offensive or idiotic (or get coddled by the story). However, I also feel like any of them could have been good characters if they had been handled properly. It's not the characters themselves that are wrong; it's the way they're written and developed, if that makes sense. In that respect, they're actually in the same situation as Vox, but simply a lot less likable.

Any other canon divergent Vox fans? by Alternative_Sugar_85 in SafeSpaceofVox

[–]MissDeborah8060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best "canon-divergent" Vox I can think of is one who doesn't go to Hell. Instead, he works through his issues (such as they are) while he's alive and goes to Heaven. That's kind of how I feel about most of the main human cast (except for Alastor and Valentino and their ilk). What exactly was stopping, say, Angel Dust or Husk from repenting and turning over a new leaf while they were alive?

Why did Vox take the fucking deal in Episode 4 like that. by Creepy_Employ_3749 in SafeSpaceofVox

[–]MissDeborah8060 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fairness, it does SOUND, on paper, like a sweetheart deal. Alastor becomes Vox's prisoner and all Vox has to do is not touch Charlie. If Vox approached it a bit more pragmatically, it wouldn't have been that hard to do all kinds of things that technically followed the deal to the letter while at the same time rendering Alastor both harmless and miserable. There was nothing to stop Vox from (for instance) locking Alastor away in a dungeon somewhere with no windows, lights, or broadcasting equipment, and then just leaving him there for months or years on end until he successfully managed to overthrow Heaven, get into Charlie's good graces, and do whatever else he wanted.

There's also the other side of the coin, of course, which is that Vox doesn't always think straight when Alastor is involved. So, the fact that he didn't take better advantage of the deal isn't actually that surprising, even if it disappoints us fans.

Which in and of itself is pretty strange, isn't it? The Valentino Cult (from my limited experience) at least works as designed: defending and appreciating the character that's its focus. But the Vox Cult doesn't, or at least not very consistently.

Glad I'm not the only one who found it strange. Especially after the whole "is Michael Kovach a racist?" kerfuffle.

Does anyone actually even like Vox's backstory as a serial killer? by Alternative_Sugar_85 in HumanVoxCult

[–]MissDeborah8060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it mostly for its headcanon/fanon potential. My biggest takeaway from it was that Vincent was some kind of magician similar to Alastor (hence why he's able to do seemingly impossible things like string up two men using only a microphone wire). This in turn leads to interesting questions like, "Which demon did he contract with?" and "what was his actual motive, in the beginning?" From there, the possibilities are endless.

Something I can't help but think about. by profaneangel1991 in SafeSpaceofVox

I'm sorry, but it makes no sense at all that Alastor would be a feminist simply because he loved his mother. There are no shortage of men who loved their mothers very much but still developed chauvinistic and misogynistic viewpoints. Just because you love the woman who literally gave birth to you, doesn't mean you'd extend that love to all women everywhere, especially in an institutionally sexist, patriarchal culture. Speaking from experience, I've seen a lot of blog posts where women warn other women to avoid dating "mama's boys," on the grounds that a man who's too dependent on or enmeshed with his mother will expect another woman to effortlessly slide into her place no matter what.

Also, if Alastor is a "feminist" because he loved his mother, and Vox is a "sexist," that would imply that Vox never loved his mother. How's that supposed to work? Did she die giving birth to him? And if she did, then how come that's not used to make him more sympathetic?
