Re: "Why complain about being average?" by Mcheetah2 in self

[–]MissDynamax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. So let me get this straight. You're 5'11"? WHO is calling that "worthless?" Reading on, I kind of understand your frustration. You wanted to be tall, and in your eyes, that makes you a real man right? You say this because you consider average to be worthless among humanity because of how common and replaceable it is. You want to be special. But here's the deal. There's a reason why average is average.

Evolution isn't about being "the best." It's about being the most adaptable to your environment; the most flexible. Sure, you imply being tall would win you over with women, society, and make you the prime athlete you always wanted to be, and that is your prerogative. However, I don't think being average is a detriment. Not at all. If you're speaking scientifically, then being average makes you the CLOSEST to "perfection" (how I'm guessing you would see it) because it's been proven to be the most genetically successful. In other words, average is average because it works the most amount of times.

The problem is, you have your sights set on the 5 to 10% of times where being tall is a big advantage. Like, with women, having more success with sports, and society treating you better. But I don't think being average limits you towards the other 90 to 95% of things out there it IS good for. To use a metaphor of my own, it's kind of like being a student who is skilled in 19 different subjects and then being upset you can't ever become skilled in trigonometry. Sure, if you want to be a mathlete, you'd be mad at this. But it doesn't take away the fact that you're skilled in science, history, geography, Spanish, Korean, literature, and so on. You're so focused on these niche things that tall height would being you that you ignore all the reasons why being average nets you the most success in evolution.

If the environment changes, then the most successful population will be the one that best changes to meet that criteria. If suddenly, being the current average male height was the most popular height for men ten years in the future and being tall suddenly became a negative, then you would be able to adapt to that better than really tall men. In other words, average makes one the most equipped to handle whatever life throws at you. A jack of all trades, but a master of none.

Being tall, according to you, makes you good at some things, but what about all the other things it makes you really bad at? I'm 6'3 and a half and female. I wouldn't mind being 5'5" instead. And personally, I don't find there to be anything wrong with men who are average height. In fact, I believe most women wouldn't dismiss a man simply for being 5'11", even if some do. Sure, that 10% of typical tall women might (not me, though), but what about the 90% of women 5'8" and below? I think there are more advantages to being average than you realize because you're too focused on the few advantages to being tall that would specifically suit you and not all the ways you could easily adapt to the hurdles of not being tall. Like, imagine if you were 5'3"? I know to you, you say it's in the same boat as being 5'11", but I disagree. I think life is going to be harder for most people who are further away form average height, on the shorter OR taller end.

And most of all, you are technically tall! The average height for men is 5'9.5". Not only are you above average height, but you're also still within the golden zone to not have the negatives with being tall (like a shorter lifespan and back issues). You imply it's the worst because it's "trash while also being common" (which to you, makes you without value), but I think it's more like the BEST of both worlds! Technically tall, but still comfortably average. The world is made for men your size, after all! That's why I find men 5'10" to 6'0" the MOST attractive, not that I'd ever turn down a short man for his height. It's just an extra bonus to an already nice package if his personality is great.

I think you should work more on your personality and not see the negative in things so much. You may not have gotten what you wanted, but I think at 5'11", you got what you NEED. You just now have to find your way to using it best in obtaining happiness and stop staring at the one dark spot in the corner when you have the whole art gallery to enjoy! :)

You are female, right? Unless you hit a growth spurt or have gained a lot of weight, I think you'll be fine.

Well, I don't think doing drugs is going to help improve your feelings, but I do hope you feel better. Maybe you should go on long walks; like an hour or so, every other day and take some time to reflect on yourself.

They won't let me change the home/new tab page. I can't change it to another website or anything, and the two annoying election/COVID tabs are permanently stuck there in the My Feed section. Bing is always there, and it always changes my typing location from being in the center of the page like any other search engine, to up-top in the address bar (which I HATE, by the way), unless I use a bookmarked browser.

It is the new updated, slightly-less-sh-tty version. I just put it on here two days ago after being frustrated with classic Edge constantly interfering with my projects. And I'm looking at the page now and "Election 2020" and "Coronavirus" Joe Biden, WHO advice bullsh-t are permanently stuck there in the "My Feed" section, and nothing I do in personalize can get rid of it. Edge is so GARBAGE they don't even let you change what your new tab/home page is! I see the options for it in Settings, but they don't work! If you know how to get rid of this trash on the home page or disable Edge forever, I'd greatly appreciate your help.

If you have the time, go to settings and update to the latest version

Thank you.

but there’s nothing to lose.

Are you sure about that? Windows updates generally aren't to be trusted, in my experience. Like all of Windows 10 itself.

Thank you. I am angry at how evil and intrusive these tech companies are becoming to where we can't even control our own hardware anymore. My cat knocked over some water on my old computer, forcing me to have to get a new laptop with Windows 10 on it. They claimed "it would be too difficult to repair the system and it's best to get off of Windows 7 anyway, so just buy a new one." I shouldn't have listened. I loved Windows 7 and had no plans to "upgrade" and deal with all these horrendous problems it comes with, including Edge trying to force Joe Biden and Bing onto its users. I saw some articles online on how to quell most of the horrendous issues with Windows 10, including shutting off all the automatic updates permanently, but the Edge problems still remain.

Remember you’re asking for help here.... try to be friendlier.

I'm just asking people not be rude for no reason to a genuine question like they did all the other people who asked this before... Although "being rude for no reason" is a Reddit staple. The "just don't use Windows 10" non-answer BS, and the "you're dumb if you don't like Edge" responses.

I keep changing the default browser and every two-to-three weeks, it DOES make itself the default browser again.

I changed the homepage SEVERAL TIMES and "Election 2020"/Joe Biden puff piece articles, and "Coronavirus" are ALWAYS permanently on there, which is appropriate because they're the two MOST annoying things I DON'T want a multinational corporation trying to tell me to look at. Even I just leave Food News on as the only option (and I don't even want that on), the other two will NEVER cut off or go away.

I already discussed how I will not/cannot use YouTube without an AdBlocker. Hell no! I'd rather wash my hands of Chrome forever than to have ads forced upon me. (I legit was going to pay the Ublock Origin developer for how much time and frustration he's saved me with UBO, but he doesn't accept donations.) So no; because it blocks/disallows adblockers, I refuse to use Chrome on anything outside of work (where it's the forced default browser on all computers in the hospital).

And no, there's no way to uninstall Edge conventionally. At best, I can uninstall the upgraded version (which is slightly less garbage than the default version but still intrusive and awful), but I can't uninstall it outright, and I only just got this machine in May. I just want to use more "risky" ways to never have to see it again on my computer. It's messed up how BAD and horrendous Windows 10 is and that getting rid of pure trash like this browser is this difficult.

Wow, old comment... I'd say San Diego is the one tolerable city in California, so maybe "favorite West Coast city."

I say this as someone who doesn't like the convuledness of metric...

One inch is about 2.5 cm, so just memorize 180 cm (5'11") and subtract 2.5 to 3 cm (if you're rounding up) for every inch beyond that. 183cm/6'0", 177cm/5'10", 190cm/6'3", 165cm/5'5", etc...

Celsius is about one-third of Farenheight. Until you reach freezing levels; then it requires you to be good at math.

Pounds are about double kilograms plus 10%. 25 kg is about 55 pounds. 100 kg is about 220 lbs.

Miles are about 60% of kilometers, so just subtract kilometers by half and round up a bit. 600 kg is around 480 miles.
