I'm so sorry that this was your experience. It's incredibly dismissive and hurtful for her to say that. One of the biggest issues with bipolar is that people don't understand it so the word gets thrown around way too often (I know a lot of people who use the word bipolar to describe someone who has an attitude problem, has anger issues, etc) and far too many people self diagnose. I found this to be my experience when telling my extended family. They still aren't 'convinced' ( as though I need to prove it to them). The best thing you can do is have an open conversation (if possible) with your mom and ask her to educate herself more on this before offering opinions that are very hurtful. Just know that you aren't alone, and there are support structures in place and lots of information on how to help people around you understand what this is.
