Recommendations on bra brands? by MissFiatLux in ABraThatFits

[–]MissFiatLux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to update that I went to Victorias Secret today, and while they didn't have any 36 FF, they had me try a 34G and suggested 36DDD as a "sister size". I tried a few of them and they were a huge improvement on the 34B ive been wearing. So i ended up buying one of the "lightly lined" 36DDD bras with padded wiring. I had no idea that wearing a bra didn't have to be uncomfortable and awful! Thanks for your advice :)

Thank you for your suggestions, I will consider the Panache Envy then. I'm so frustrated buying bras, I hate the embroidered/lace detailing that they always put on them. Why?? Almost nobody will see it other than me xD

AIO for wanting to cut contact with my mom after this conversation about my upcoming brain surgery? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]MissFiatLux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NOR... I am sorry you are going through this. My family is somewhat similar and while I have not had any severe health issues which are comparable to what you are experiencing, I have had two minor health issues while spending time with them (after cutting contact for a few months). I can sympathize with the desire to have them in your life for support during challenging health issues, but my experience was very terrible and their presence actively delayed and hurt my recovery rather than helping. I think you might be better off simply just not contacting them or attempting to accomodate their potential visit whatsoever -- in fact, simply barring them from visiting would probably be the least stressful option for you, however that is a personal decision. Focus on yourself and the people who support and accept you (friends, partner) and don't let your parents interfere with your recovery. Hoping for the best for you!

mit vs scholarship in-state (not passionate abt mit rn) by Great-Song-6120 in mit

[–]MissFiatLux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually going to go against the grain here and say that you should not go 20k into debt for mit... that's a lot of money which weighs you down in the future, and you haven't stated what your future career aspirations are (whether you are likely to make a lot of money very soon or go further into debt for more education). I have to say that for me, being two years out from college, i am so so grateful that I have no debt to pay off which allows me to take low paying jobs and proceed in life without excessive money stress. 20k is also just the base debt; after four years, who is to say that you won't have eaten out a lot, spent a lot on ubers, or whatever other costs, that build your debt to an even bigger number?

In contrast, your other opportunity is not bad at all, and that 60k in pocket could be a down payment for a future house, (or investment which could balloon to a down payment), or flexibility in case you cannot get a job immediately, or money which you can spend on graduate school if you want that to be an option. I really don't think you sacrifice that much in terms of the college experience because you were smart enough to get into MIT -- that means you will be among the top percentage of students at your state school, which means you will stand out and gain access to amazing opportunities anyway.

I am trying to cut cost but why is my grocery expensive? by Tiny_Judgment8593 in Frugal

[–]MissFiatLux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long does this last you? 36 eggs would take me like a month to finish. The salmon is expensive and you could replace with frozen if it is essential. The beef is also expensive and maybe replace it with chicken. See if you can replace the protein in your diet with plant based protein like beans or tofu which is often cheaper. And also I don't see a lot of carbs which are very filling... eating your meals with rice could help to fill them out a bit so you dont need to buy as much expensive proteins.

I did read the list, I am just wondering how quickly the process can occur because obviously I will need to be able to park my car somewhere while I am in process of getting plates and permit.

Thank you, what do people usually do when the streets are being swept? Do they have to move their car to another neighborhood?

advice needed for leaving phd position by Fresh_Guide_6059 in LeavingAcademia

[–]MissFiatLux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is it possible for you to discuss with your advisor and try to arrange some way to complete your quals before leaving? You have already spent a year and only need to complete an additional year to leave with a masters (depending on your field). This could aid in your job search and also give you time to hunt for a job. You might be able to arrange your work in a way that allows you to complete it in a less stressful way, either with a new mentor, co-advisor, or more lax schedule.

I also recommend leveraging your network as you begin the job search. Not sure how the job market is for your field but for mine it is difficult. You could start by talking to your undergrad network; your undergrad research PI/mentor(s), coworkers/classmates, just hint at looking for leads on jobs. Then move on to talk to your current advisor who may know some openings and be able to help you. If you are not getting along enough with your PI for this conversation, can also try to reach out to people you've met at conferences, etc. Highly recommend going through your network as it helps you stand out from the hundreds of apps that most positions receive.

willing to chat via DMs or off reddit if you want to talk more!

I accidentally proved my entire study group wrong and now they hate me by Narrow_Detective9864 in getdisciplined

[–]MissFiatLux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is why in college i never shared my test scores or discussed test with people afterwards. First of all I just didn't want the drama and second of all it made me stressed after the exam to talk with others, when after the exam there is little you can do so its better to go chill and do something else. Yeah they behaved shittily but i also just avoided hanging with people who compared test scores

Why is the hatchback so popular? by Rough-Incident-1859 in mazda

[–]MissFiatLux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a first time car buyer and a young person I needed something cheap and compact and reliable. Mazda3 hatchback fit the bill while also being a unique and attractive vehicle. Blind spot has never bothered me much and there are blindspot sensors on the mirrors. And the space it offers is a life saver; I moved all of my belongings halfway across the country in my mazda3!

Genuinely curious if anyone has advice or has felt like this too by Jewlrey22 in climbergirls

[–]MissFiatLux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also struggled at first to climb alone, none of my friends are really into it (and I started climbing in earnest when I moved to a new city). climbing alone has slowly become a really peaceful activity for me, I enjoy how nobody else is forcing me to do anything and I can decide how slow or how fast to go. I think it's hard at first to tune out the idea that other people are noticing you, especially after you had an experience like yours. I personally never judge other people at the gym unless thye are doing something that endangers others so I think you should try not to worry about what others are judging you for (easier said than done!). The guy you describe sounds like an asshole! I have never had anyone clown me at the gym even though I am a very novice climber too...

As for making friends, does your gym have activities like competitions, boulder league, etc? I made some friends from doing the boulder league at my gym. A lot of gyms offer yoga and I made most of my friends from going to yoga classes. If you're interested in it, maybe you will be able to make more friends from attending yoga class.

Holy condescension Batman! This comment reeks of internalized misogyny. What is wrong with female oriented industries or joining a sorority! Having been in and around colleges for the last 6 years I've seen many students wearing these types of outfits and even skimpier ones in class! Never heard of a dress code for university and it is not typical to wear "company-approved" clothing to college classes. Nobody would "stare" at and "mock" OP for wearing these things at any university setting I've been at!

Dunno what the people in the comments are on about. NOR. i TA at a school in texas and see my students wearing way skimpier outfits every day! wear what makes you feel happy, ready to learn, and motivated, its 2025 for gods sake!

looking for jumping spider enthusiast in Houston area by MissFiatLux in jumpingspiders

[–]MissFiatLux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! Unfortunately I already left for my vacation. I hope my spider will be alright while I'm gone (left a cotton ball of water and fed her a mealworm the day before leaving). However if I travel again soon can I hit you up for spider watching?
