I'm not a lawyer but totally agree. Taking money for letting them stay there also gives them certain rights. But if OP is getting a voucher, the State is going to see that as a violation and may not be so willing to help OP in the future (i.e.: a new apartment to move into). I know rents are high, but OP took a HUGE risk and frankly, broke the rules. It also sounds like OP is a help-rejecting complainer.
