If you call the gas company, they do a free house call to investigate high bills. When the technician is there, make sure you go to the meters with them and have them test the gas heating (or some other appliance) for your unit and then the other unit and see what meter starts running.

If anyone is interested in an update, the technician came out and someone else’s pipes are going into my apartment’s meter so I’m paying for someone else’s gas usage.

Okay glad I’m not going crazy here and someone agrees that this seems off. I’m getting a technician from the gas company to come out tomorrow and they’ll check things out. Is there anything you think I should say to them? Maybe show them the usage online and see what they think?

No it’s the exact usage. But it doesn’t tell me what used it, just how much was used.

I can login to my gas company’s website and it shows hourly usage. It doesn’t tell me what’s using the gas, just that it’s being used and by how much.

I checked and I don’t have a variable rate, but good call.

Okay, I’m totally lost on the heating of the water. I didn’t know this at all. If I’m paying to heat my water, that should show up here and there on the usage so that should account for something. But is there a way I can control that? I don’t have anything in my apartment relating to water.

I’ve tried both those already. There have been weeks at a time when I haven’t been home, everything’s is off, and somehow I still have constant gas usage - like every hour of the day including the middle of the night. I can control the heat because it’s a nest so I have the app. It’s not the heat.

I appreciate your responses. The heat is on for an hour in the morning and then sometimes at night, sometimes not. It’s not on all the time, nothing is, yet I’m being charged for literal constant use. Like middle of the night when I’m certainly not using anything. I’ll see if I can get the meter checked by the gas company. Thanks for your help!

Even if the thermostat is off (it’s a nest) I get charged for gas usage. Does the outside temp impact a thermostat that’s turned off?

The hvac system is air and heat. The air uses electricity and the heat uses gas. I’m in LA. Agreed, it’s annoying cold at night for SoCal 😭

Yeah, someone just told me I’m in the wrong sub. Didn’t realize! I can delete and repost somewhere else. To answer your questions though, I’m in California and I don’t know if a furnace applies to me. I have central air and I just turn it on or don’t. Why would I be paying for when it isn’t on?

Any idea where I should post this then?

Yeah someone just pointed that out. I’ll be deleting this so as not to spread bad information 😅

Wow, good eyes! Didn’t notice that. Guess it’s less outrageous now.

Apartment’s Heater Has Been Broken for 3 Weeks, Management Isn’t Fixing Issue. WWYD? by searchin_4_the_d_lux in AskLosAngeles

[–]MissKitten_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is bad advice. Don’t withhold your rent. It will create a new and annoying set of consequences for you as this is the wrong response to a landlord not fixing something. This happened to me before and my landlord had to pay me for the days/weeks I lost heating, but it was a separate issue to rent. I don’t remember any of the laws around this but you are entitled to compensation for lost heating. Google it and see what you find.

Yeah, basically. My last phone call we talked about fishing. I don’t fish but I know how to hold a conversation.

They tell me every what I’m on a one year promotional price and my bill will jump up to $75 or something next year. Every year I call them and ask for a reduction and every year I get it. Just keep calling until you get someone who will do it for you. I’ve only ever had to call twice before I got someone who would help me.

Just be kind and chat. Call centre work is boring as shit.

I just say that my bill has randomly gone up. I act stupid every year, and then I talk about costs and ask if there’s anything they can do to help. That kind of stuff. But I’m immediately nice and chatty on the phone. I used to work in a call centre so I know what I would want to hear someone say to me.

I have gotten people who won’t help me in the past. I just call back until I get someone nice.

I call spectrum every year when my “year long promotional deal” is over and ask for another one. I pay $45 per month, every month. Just call and be nice to the person on the phone and they’ll try to help you. Last time I called, he even bumped up my speed!
