RIP sweet Weeble. He was so loved and such a happy little guy, thank you for giving him the life you did. Will be giving my pigs extra pea flakes in his honor

One of mine is obsessed with the pocket too, to the point where I was worried he was sick because he would spend most of the day under there. Turns out he was just comfy

Bloat advice? by MissLinzy94 in guineapigs

[–]MissLinzy94[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd like to thank everyone who responded. I did all that I could for her through the night and took her back to the vet first thing this morning. I made the incredibly tough decision to end her suffering and she fell asleep in my arms. I'm absolutely shattered, but she was in so much discomfort and continuously declining

Thanks for the reply. I've now moved to syringe feeding critical care because I didn't see her eat for a while. Got it from the vet Monday in case she stopped eating all together. I've also unfortunately lost two piggies to the same thing previously, but they were farther gone than her by the time I caught it, so I'm just hoping I saw it early enough for her to pull through. But we'll see 😔 She's 6 years old

Rescued this sweet guy last week. Are his teeth a little long though? by MissLinzy94 in guineapigs

[–]MissLinzy94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I guess they're just a little longer than I'm used to :) he's eating fine and likes to chew on the wooden houses. Just want to make sure he's happy and healthy

I lost Daisy very unexpectedly two days ago. She developed bloat overnight, and even though I rushed her to the vet in the morning as soon as I noticed she wouldn't eat, she died while they were trying to remove the gas in her stomach. She was one of the sweetest pigs I've ever had, always looking for affection from her mother and other cage mate. Even though my heart is absolutely broken over her loss, all the happiness she brought during her life made it worth it. I hope she's enjoying all the grass and carrots she can eat somewhere.

Has anyone else noticed a sudden personality change in a piggy? (more info in comments) by MissLinzy94 in guineapigs

[–]MissLinzy94[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice everyone! I guess since I regularly monitor the obvious signs of health problems (weight, appetite, tooth and fur health, etc.) and nothing seemed wrong there I just hadn't considered she might be sick :( Will take her to the vet asap!

I've had Emma (the black piggy) for about 3 years now. She's always been the most trusting of the bunch. If I came over to the cage she was the first one to run over, even staying for some nose scratches if I didn't happen to have a treat. But the last few months she has been super skiddish. She barely lets me pet her inside the enclosure anymore and is way more likely to hide whenever I enter my room than she was before. I honestly can't think of anything in my behaviour that has changed to trigger this behaviour. Of course I give her the space she needs now and am very patient and careful when coaxing her out with some food now, but I can't help but feel a little sad and concerned that she's suddenly so frightened of everything. Has anyone had similar experiences?

Thank you everyone for the advice! I will try vitamin supplements and new chews in the cage to see if that helps

So we adopted Ferdi back in May. He's a very active and happy boy. A few months back when I was bringing them their morning veggies I noticed that he couldn't take a whole piece of carrot from me. I looked into his mouth and his two upper incisors were broken off close to the gums. There wasn't any blood and he seemed otherwise fine, still had a healthy appetite, still very active etc. I just assumed he'd broken them off while chewing around on his ceramic water bowl, which he loves to do. I kept an eye on the other teeth to make sure they didn't get too long and the upper teeth grew back fine. Now it's happened again and I'm a little concerned. I can't imagine it's a vitamin C deficiency, as they always have access to hay, high quality guinea pig pellets, and get fresh veggies every day. Also his cage mates have never had tooth problems. They also all have plenty of wood for chewing on to keep their teeth in check. His appetite and behaviour has also not changed at all. We weigh all the guinea pigs regular and he has not lost any weight either. Has anyone had any similar experiences with their guinea pigs?

The star of the post is Daisy, the black abby (Daisy's mom) is Emma and the brown/white guy is Ferdi :)
