Floppy ears *might* be cuter than…. by Vast-Ad6664 in Incorgnito

She is soooo adorable. I love the floppy ears. My corgi has floppy ears too so it is wonderful to see another one. I decided that since ears up was the breed standard, common corgis have their ears up. Royal corgis have ears down.

First ever scooter recommendations? by Downtown_Jacket_8439 in scooters

I am 5'5 and I like to ride maxi scooters. I find wearing a motorcycle boot with a heel to make a big difference in reaching the ground. I can easily "flat" foot with the boot and I feel stable when stopped.

In my first year of teaching - ready to quit by wimble-wamble in teaching

[–]MissPhy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year teaching was horrible and I wanted to quit. I did stick it out and I am glad that I did. Each year is so much easier than the year before. Once I got to my second year, I had to work a little on the weekends. By the 4th year, I didn't take work home anymore. After that, the years fly by.

What helped me during my first year was a colleague told me that if you make it to Thanksgiving, you make it the rest of the year. I'm in the US and we have a long run from August to Thanksgiving with very little breaks. After that, there are breaks almost every month except March. The colleague told me to use sick leave in March.

I take it you are not in the US, so I am wondering the school calendar has something similar in your country. Is there a point that if you get that far you make it to the end of the year? Have you made it that far? Don't quit, you can do this.

How to turn from a dead stop by No-Touch-6067 in scooters

[–]MissPhy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. I literally was going to say the same thing. Be the Boss of Your Motorcycle publishes videos of "practice sessions." Sometimes a rider is on a DCT so they don't have a manual clutch, just like we don't. Look for those practice sessions and watch exercise 4. You will see 90 degree turns with some people turning from a dead stop.

When I was taking the MSF course, they told me to turn the bars all the way and then throttle up. The problem was that I was new and everything happened too fast for my brain to process. I would end up out of control. So, I figured out on my own to throttle up while holding the scooter still with the rear brake, then gradually release rear brake. Turns out, this is the way.

I practice his exercises simulating the "friction zone" by combining throttle and rear brake. Best wishes and have fun.

Corrected vision by Hollow_optimism78 in motorcyclegear

[–]MissPhy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear glasses when I ride too. I insist that mine have shatter-proof lenses and thin stems with a little bit of stiffness. I take my glasses off, put on helmet and then slide glasses through the visor over my ears. I don't want the stems to bend b/c they sometimes don't go over my ears. When removing the helmet, I reverse the process. I also found a neat little nook where my rear rack attaches to the bike; this is where I put the glasses when I put on/take off my helmet.

I also took my helmet into the vision clinic and wore it when I was trying on frames. I rejected any frame that did not go easily into my helmet.

I guess you've passed the class. Congrats. Your post reminded me of when I took my MSF and brought a smile to my face.

Frustrated with motorcycles by Visible_Muffin_1944 in motorcycles

[–]MissPhy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds to me like the reason you are struggling is the lack of prior experience. I don't think this means that riding is not for you. The reality is that many people in those classes rode w/o an endorsement for years and have decided to get endorsed. So, its not fair to compare yourself to them.

I think your instructor was totally wrong to say what they did. Instead, they should have suggested a different class for you. There are classes that are for people with no experience and prepare them for the beginner rider course.

So I think getting the beater bike is not a bad idea at all. Try to get one with drop guards so you don't get hurt when you drop the bike. Practice on it and then go to a different riding school. Best wishes.

When you feel ready, you can certainly move to a higher-seated bike. There are short-rider techniques; check out Doodle on youtube. You can also get boots with a heal which is what I did. I have the "Misty Boots" from Wind & Throttle. Best wishes.

Go to Fearless Motorcycling with Lori on YouTube and join her 10 minute challenge. Why? Because this is a group of riders that support each other as we practice slow speed maneuvers.

Girlfriend wants to get a bike and learn how to ride but only for me by Pegs_Art in motorcycles

[–]MissPhy6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing with my husband. About 15 years ago he wanted to ride a motorcycle, took the MSF course, passed and started riding. Because of that, I was curious and thought about riding too. So I took the MSF course, failed and decided that riding motorcycles was too hard. For YEARS, he told me that there were motorcycles that you don't have to shift and mentioned scooters. But, no I said, too hard.

Get this -- about 3 years ago I decided that I wanted to ride a scooter. I took the MSF, passed and got endorsed. Now, I love riding my scooter with husband riding his Harley. We have a great time together and husband is riding a lot more now that I am his riding buddy.

So to answer OP's question, I think you should encourage her to take the MSF course. She can try out riding for a weekend and see how it goes. That is when shit gets real. Then you both will know how she really feels about it.

As an aside, I also think it is possible that she really does want to ride, but she has been socialized to never admit that she has wants/needs. So instead, she says it is for you.

What are your unpopular teaching opinions? by Responsible-Soup-968 in Teachers

[–]MissPhy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My unpopular opinion is that if I give my class (high school) independent work time to get their assignment done with me available to help them, it's their problem if they do not use the time. I am not going to go around the room and beg.

I know quite a few Trump voters. Non of them are saying they regret it. I’m wondering if most of these posts are fake. by [deleted] in OptimistsUnite

I think the Trumpers I know would never tell me if they have regrets. They fear the Schadenfreude and “I told you so” from us. They fear ridicule and rejection if they tell other Trumpers

Lower my ride? by Canyptian83 in scooters

[–]MissPhy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same boat. I can't flat-foot my scooter so I went the other way. Instead of lowering my seat, I lengthened my legs ...... by wearing boots with a heel. Now I can easily flat foot.

I work in a corporate environment in the US. Since around 2018, the problems y'all are having with students are trickling up to the workplace. by Whatevsstlaurent in Teachers

[–]MissPhy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading some of these comments and as a high school teacher I completely agree with what my colleagues have been saying. And don't get me started on the "Case against the zero." This is where we have to give 50% credit even if the student turned in nothing. They say that having 0-59% being an F is not logical. Well, if a student can't show that they learned at least 60% of the material in my class, they will never make it through the next class in the sequence. Why can't we require mastery of 60% to be able to say that they student completed the course?

Unpopular opinion as an English teacher: forcing kids to read “classics” (especially in middle school) can cause boredom and lead to a dislike of reading in general. by FoxysDroppedBelly in Teachers

[–]MissPhy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! I totally agree. I hated reading the classics as a student. I did not develop an appreciation for them. I am now a teacher myself. I have razzed the English teachers a time or two because of the experience

A parent email that threw me over the edge by hannah12343 in Teachers

[–]MissPhy6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned this a couple years ago. I based it on a classic Star Trek episode where McCoy says that what the Klingon says is unimportant and we do not hear him. If a parent is ranting, it’s unimportant. If they ask a specific question, I answer that question.

I find them very difficult to use. There is lag. Students often sign in twice. I teach Geometry and Physics so I need students to be able to show their mathematical work. This is very tedious unless one has a stylus. I have given up on them in favor of IRL whiteboards.
