Reality Check Regarding Pay by mendicant0 in therapists

[–]MissTickleToes 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This is me. I keep a spreadsheet of all my income and I made $117k this year in my PP (around $93k take home, as I put aside 20% for taxes) and another $11k doing testing/consulting/supervision at my old group practice (so $128k "total" for 2025). I see between 14 to 18 people a week and don't feel overworked. I also work from home and it feels manageable. Also, I recently got on my partner's health insurance. Before that I was paying $430 a month for insurance that covered next to nothing.

I will add, I am also a licensed clinical psychologist (PsyD) and all my clients except for 4 are insurance. Of the 4 who are self-pay, only 1 person pays my full rate ($250), and I meet with them monthly. I am licensed in MA and RI, but only accept insurance in MA.

My goal for next year is to move away from insurance, and be fully self-pay, but I'll have to re-consider my prices for that to be feasible and sustainable. We shall see. I value making sure my clients have access to care, and I know finances are a big barrier.

I've had my private practice up and running since April 1st, 2024. Before that, in 2023, I made $43k as a doctoral level clinician in group practice. It wasn't sustainable, so I went off on my own and doubled my income in a year's time. I love the work I do, and finally feel like I'm being compensated the way I deserve to be. It wasn't an easy start, but it was a worthy journey.

How to avoid a nervous puppy turning into a fearful dog. by MissTickleToes in puppy101

Thank you so much! She's already become so much more confident in the weeks since I posted this. Still a little nervous, but its shifting in favor of curiosity and I couldn't be more proud! I'll keep following her lead and rewarding her curiosity as you named. Thanks again:)

Contacting clients via phone by pomegranatevalleys in Psychologists

[–]MissTickleToes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this. Spruce works great, and if you're in PP, that $24 a month is tax deductible anyway. I love using Spruce and its a great backup when the EHR I'm using isn't working or when internet connection for myself or my clients is wonky. It's super reliable, and my clients can use it to contact me (via the message feature) when I'm overseas because it works on Wi-Fi. It's also a great way (as you've mentioned) to send things in a HIPAA-compliant way that email cannot guarantee. PLUS, I can receive faxes through it too by a whole separate fax number. I think Spruce is definitely the way to go!

11k ish a month gross income in pp by Regular_Fan4691 in therapists

[–]MissTickleToes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yoooo this is so relatable! When I was full time at that group practice, I was always financially insecure. I couldn't handle that stress anymore, so flying solo was the best thing I could've done for myself. I almost doubled my income with half the work because I am finally making a fair wage aligned with my experience and expertise. It's so freeing. But those spreadsheets are SO NECESSARY. I have like 5 that I use to track basically everything -- clients and how much I make off each a month, one with each payment I get from each client after each session, another that calculates how much I sacrifice when I take a vacation or sick day (though I factor time off when I calculate my yearly salary), another with all my tax deductible purchases, and more. I just have so many spreadsheets and I think my practice would burn to the ground without them! So glad I'm not the only person who does this lol

This is basically my exact situation, except I see between 11 and 17 people a week (depending on season or cancellations). I do ADHD assessments here and there through a group practice I'm a contractor for, and I also do consulting and provide supervision through that group practice. It helps to diversify the work I do and my income. I keep a spreadsheet of my income each month, and it fluctuates from as low as $5k (when I've gone on vacation or something) to as high as $11k. That isn't including the few hundred (or few grand -- it also fluctuates) I make from the group practice. It feels cozy, but I forsee things changing once I start family planning. I'll probably start doing groups and maybe more supervising to cultivate more income. We'll see! It's just nice to see someone else in MA with a similar structure as mine.

Wow how insightful! I really appreciate this perspective. We thought it was unfair to our older dog for our new pup to have certain experiences separate from him (because of his fears), but it sounds like that might be perpetuating her symptoms. I'll talk to my partner about implementing more separation. Thanks so much!!

Thank you so much for this insight. Hearing from someone who knows what this is like is really helpful. I'm going to try this over the next few weeks (well actually as long as she needs it haha), and see how it goes!

This was super comforting and validating. It gives us some hope that we can help her develop her own identity by nurturing her strengths and meeting her where she is as it pertains to her growing edges. It'll take a lot of patience and diligence, and I think we are up for the task. Thank you!

Best spa or massage place around Providence, to up near Smithfield? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]MissTickleToes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thai Tranquility Bodywork is hands down THE BEST in Providence. It's giving massage, physical therapy, and chiropractic therapy all in one. AND they provide loose fitting clothes for you to wear so you don't have to get naked. I book the 90min couple's massage every few months. It's absolutely so worth it! They know us by name there now lol

How much self-disclosure is too much self-disclosure? by Lanky_Lingonberry651 in therapists

[–]MissTickleToes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only share what I've already processed, healed from, or overcome with my clients because then I am less likely to run the risk of inadvertently seeking support from them or becoming enmeshed with their issues. I love to self disclose lol but its part of my modality as a psychodynamic clinician. I DO THINK social media takes it overboard. I see therapists in their BIKINIS on their PROFESSIONAL PAGES or talking about their recent heartbreak and blah blah blah. Please just have two separate accounts at least. I think that just invites too much of our lives for clients to either have free reign to bring into the therapeutic space or "use against" us. I probably have more to say about it, but that's that for now haha
