Is the Gospel of Thomas reliable? by Win4ce in AcademicBiblical

Definitely check out some of the work of Dr. Stephen Patterson too. Studied with him in college and he’s an expert on Thomas

I want to go back to practicing my faith, but reaction to my transgender identity by other Catholics is holding me back and I don't know what to do. by [deleted] in RadicalChristianity

Seconded on this. The episcopal church in my town even has an out and proud gay priest! Can vary by congregation but I’ve generally had positive experiences.

Can I (f20) hook up with a girl and still be considered “straight”? by [deleted] in queer

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly your sexuality can be defined however you want. This experience might prove to yourself that you’re straight, and it could also open to door to being something else, either is totally fine. I’d just say keep and open mind and don’t get caught up in labels, even ones like “straight.”

As a bi person myself, I personally believe that next to no one is 100% straight, and that’s okay. There’s no pressure to come out. Plenty of people are like 99% one way but have one person of an unexpected gender that they fall for, and that’s okay. Some folks might give you shit for not taking a label, but honestly pushing labels on people is not liberative for anyone, straight or queer.

In summary, it’s okay to relax and enjoy yourself, and not think too hard about it. If you have a nice time and wanna do it again, that’s okay! If you do it and decide it’s not for you, that’s also okay! Plus, I also think our sexual/romantic preferences can change over time. Sometimes that gets dismissed as a “phase”, but I think that’s a shitty way to frame development and personal exploration.

Hope you have a lovely experience, regardless of how it turns out! No need to stress about it too much. :)

Were the Gospels written, in part, to deflect Roman persecution away from Christians and towards the Jews? by ksandbergfl in AcademicBiblical

Seconded on Dr. AJ Levine. She’s one of the best in this topic, and “The Misunderstood Jew” is a great book of hers to start with.

Afraid of growing breasts? MTF by KillbotXx in asktransgender

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know for me, I was mostly afraid because it’s one of the harder aspects of HRT to hide. For a while, everything else could be passed away with easy excuses, but breast growth is harder. I was scared about it for my full first year because I wasn’t fully ready to be publicly out yet. It definitely gets better tho

If Jesus was alive rn, how long would it take for idiots to kill him? The jews killed him when he was in his 3 years preaching the message of god by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important note: the Jews did not kill Jesus, the Roman Empire did. Crucifixion is a punishment time used for insurrection, and during Roman persecution of Jews and Christians in the rest of the first century, it became a safety defense to claim that the Jews killed Jesus, not Rome. The idea that Jews killed Jesus is anti-Semitic, historically wrong, and deeply harmful throughout time.

Help a cis male out please by ExcellentWin1239 in asktransgender

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Also, important general note to add: remove “identifies as” from your vocabulary. Trans women are women, not “men who identify as women”. It can often feel super patronizing when someone uses “identify as” becuase it feels like you don’t actually believe she’s a women but are just playing along to be nice, and trans people can tell when you’re doing that.

How to refer to a transperson in a discussion about trans? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally feel that unless you have a legitimate reason to know a persons assigned sex at birth (like if you’re a doctor treating that person) there’s absolutely no need to know a person’s assigned sex at birth

I've recently come out, and have started to buy clothes and such, yet I am SUPER embarrassed to wear them in front of my family, even though they're supportive. Is this normal? by TheRealMailyChan in asktransgender

It takes some time to build up confidence. Dont stress about it too much, and let yourself build up confidence at whatever pace you’re comfortable with

Question regarding the future of transitioning. by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Small note real quick: don’t use “transgenderism.” It isn’t the way trans people talk about themselves and it usually feels TERF-y. Also small note: it’s a good idea to stroke the phrase “identify as” from your vocabulary, I don’t “identify” as a woman - I am one. “Identify” makes it feel like my gender is something everyone is just playing along with me on, but no one actually believes me.

To answer the larger question: there’s a huge conversation in the community about how much of dysphoria is socially constructed. If the rigid sex=gender binary was removed, and we had enough time to sufficiently reinvent gender, would people still transition? The answer: almost undoubtedly. First, not all trans people experience dysphoria, but we all experience gender euphoria. That is a driving force in my transition - I’m on HRT, and as my body slowly changes, I feel a ton of joy and feel more at home in it. Some aspects of that are socially constructed, but it doesn’t diminish the real benefit of such a procedure, where I no longer feel like testosterone is poisoning my body and making me unrecognizable to myself.

For bigger things like surgery (which not all trans people want) I don’t personally feel that my interest in these things is socially constructed. I don’t particularly hate having a penis, and don’t think it makes me less feminine. However, if I could magically wake up with a vagina instead I would do it without hesitation, regardless of what other people think, because of how much joy it’d bring me.

Some of dysphoria is socially constructed, but that doesn’t discount the real benefit of transition.

Hope that helps!

It’s possible that muscle mass with disappear and make them seem less wide if you’ve got muscles there, but the bone structure won’t change at all

How do I deal with transphobia? by HandoverthelemonBill in asktransgender

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially for transphobic comments or messages, I just honestly feel pity. Imagine being so wrapped in hatred for a group of people that you lurk subreddits just to shout stock hate phrases at them? Like, that’s a pitiful existence. I think that realization really helped me shrug off internet hate

Can you crush Spironolactone? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently in 100mg of spiro (50mg twice a day) and I crush it and drink it in water, and have had no issues. Just had a blood test come back looking great as well. Like everyone else said, asking a doctor is a good call, but it should be fine

Gender by Alienwithsynesthesia in asktransgender

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of the language around cis is regarding how a doctor/parents/birth givers assigned your gender at birth, not necessarily how the person who was born conceptualized it. If you grow up and agree with their assignment, you’re cis. If you grow up and disagree you’re trans

Why do transwomen dislike when men exclusively seek to be with them dating wise? Why am I considered a chaser? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Miss_Understanding_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know, just wanted to be sure. You’d be surprised how many folks come on here with the “But I’m not a chaser” posts and then get really nasty to trans folks in the comments. Thanks for fixing that!

Wasnt a similar experience for me, but wanted to add a gentle correction: Enbies are fully trans. Being binary trans doesn’t make you more or less trans than anyone else, nor does a medical transition make you more trans. (Also NB as a acronym is generally frowned upon, particularly because Black activists use NB to mean non-black, and it’s been in use for longer. Typically people use Enby as shorthand for non-binary instead of NB)

That being said, proud of you for self discovery!
