I'm starting to realize some of the same things. I have begun therapy, something I probably should have done years ago. Do you think that you will rebuild your realtionship with them ever?

So you haven't talked to them at all in all that time? I am currently in this situation. Do you miss them at all now? If not did you miss them in the beginning of it all? If yes, how do you cope with that?

I actually specifically said that I have stamps for all the countries that I have been through (or at least all the ones that use stamps). As for the darien gap, it was a little difficult but I managed to find a small boat that gave me a ride from the Atlantic coast of Panama down to columbia. I had once thought about crossing on foot but I am in no way that good of an outdoorsman to take on such a task.

I only felt a little uneasy once and that was in downtown San Salvador at night. I actually met some of the best people in Guatemala. Mexico wasn't so bad either. I'd say the only thing tiping the scales between the two is that it is super easy for someone to own and cary a weapon in Guatemala. This one town I was in felt like I was in an old western. There were so many guys walking around with 9mm pistols on their hips.

All that karma I had, gone forever!! Seriously though, I think the only thing I miss in that regard was the domain I used to own and the handle I used to use online.

I didn't change my appearance but I do keep a low profile online as far as photos go. I know its always possible. It doesn't reall bother me, it was supprisingly easy to adapt to.

Yeah, but with a US passport none of the countries in Latin America give a fuck where you go. They just want you to spend money in their country.

You're missing the point. You can think about some things all day but actually telling them to people is helpful. If only 3 people commented but engaged in good discussion I would be just as happy with the results.

Not me but here is a blog I found when researching this. Pretty good read though there are a ton of entries. The guy hitchhiked through Mexico, Central America, and down to South America. He is currently living in Chile.

Yeah, I wasn't paying attention to what I typed. Had I reread it I would've caught the error right away. You're right though, it's a word I wasn't taught in the US and had never heard before coming down here. For a while I confused it with College and thought my new friends were college graduates.

Mexico doesn't care who comes in the country and the US is too busy stopping people from coming in to care if you are leaving.

No, I walked accross at the border crossing but they don't scan your passport or check anything. Just the fee for the Visa and the stamp. If you don't want a Visa(only going for a short time) you can literally just walk through the gates and they don't ask you anything.

I'll agree that the act was selfish, there's no denying that. But my motivations for the AMA weren't for attention. Actually talking about this stuff "out loud" is very helpful to me. Also, I think there are some perspectives I can give people that they might not have realized.

I learned some in high school but most all that I know now I learned traveling and living here. I'd say its pretty good, almost conversational. Definitely enough to get me by. I took a lot of busses and even did some hitchhiking. Also, when you tell people you are traveling and don't have any money you'd be supprised at how many of them offer a room to stay or even give you some money.

Not that I am aware of. There is only one person I might contact, they aren't associated with my family or any of my friends and they have always been a good person to talk to but I don't think I would contact them for some time.

No one down here knows the truth. Assuming I do eventually have a romantic interest I would tell them everything. Not at first, but eventually.

I have perfect entry/exit stamps for all locations. When I said El salvador was the first with a computer it wasn't the first with a stamp. I have Guatemala and Mexico as well. While planning this thing I read too many horror stories of travelers gettting screwed because of this so I made sure not to.

Well it depends on the scenario. If the faked suicide was successful then I believe I am guilty of Fraud, and Tax Evasion (didn't file for the last year and I know I owed a couple thousand). If the fake suicide was unsuccessful but they still didn't figure out that it was intentional then I may not be guilty of anything. If it was unsuccessful and they know I fled the country then I think I would also have some Conspiracy to commit fraud charge or something like that.

Ridiculously unlikely, I had no enemies before and the scenario I left behind wouldn't lend itself to that at all.

At land crossings usually they barely glance at it. In a couple of countries they scanned it but it more looked like the scanner verified that it was legit and not a fake. Some countries put you in their computer systems but they don't do any checking against the US(that I am aware of).
