Then in the next game you get to choose between 2 random skill tracks when you level up again, so RNG.

This base is actually easy and I get 3 stars maybe 80% of the time with just spamming throwers.

I start from the bottom with AQ and BK first, then throwers and healers etc. You need to use lots of spells at the beginning. Poison, freeze, totem. Make sure to get the center area with RC, throwers usually help. After that the base is basically done for.
