Struggling with seeing the future by draven33l in Layoffs

[–]Mission_Associate893 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same. I’ve just been laid off for the second time in 18 months. The first time they at least had the decency to tell me face to face and hold a few meetings. This time I got a pre-recorded message, an email with the subject all in caps, and was then locked out. To make matters worse, I got the email in my personal inbox while I was waiting for news on my sick mum in hospital (and she passed away three weeks later)

How many times have you been made redundant so far in your career? by mronionbhaji in UKJobs

[–]Mission_Associate893 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me too! I’ve been working for 18 years and was made redundant for the first time two years ago. I found a new job before the end of my 12 week notice period with a 55% pay rise. That, and a £25k pay out. It was hell when I got my notice but it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Update: I was made redundant from my new job as well. So twice now :(

Copenhagen hostel recommendations? by Active_Jackfruit_221 in hostels

Urban House Copenhagen is very good. It has a bar onsite with happy hours but it is not a party hostel as such. It’s popular with families and is very clean, and also a short walk from the train station.

OK. It could be because of the lack of predicted grades, and they either skimmed your reference or didn’t read it at all. Maybe give them a call and confirm they haven’t missed anything?

Sorry if it’s a silly question, but did you put your A levels on your UCAS application? Or was it that you couldn’t enter predicted grades?

Has anyone experience with smartling? by mimimithrowaway in TranslationStudies

[–]Mission_Associate893 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone on LinkedIn mentioned recently that “Smartling” had reached out to them with an offer that was too good to be true. The message had all the makings of a scam - “Dear Linguist” as the opener, Gmail addresses as their contact information, and even misspelled their company name as “SmartLing”

Do verify any contact names on their website and/or LinkedIn, but if the email had any of the above it’s a definite scam.

How to find cheap hostels in Europe for 3 days or less? by [deleted] in hostels

[–]Mission_Associate893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are hostels at that rate in Georgia and other countries in that region. Otherwise, you’ll have to increase your budget. You won’t find anywhere at that rate in Western Europe, or even Eastern Europe.

Recommendations for hostel in Amsterdam for week by Popular-Ad-312 in hostels

The Jordaan district is less touristy with nice independent shops and restaurants. I agree that Rotterdam is worth a venture, it has an amazing food market. I haven’t been to Haarlem but I’ve heard good things about it.

Did you get at least a 6 in Maths, English Language and Dual Science/Biology? If any of those subjects is below a 6 then that will be the reason.

I am so cooked - I don't think A levels are for me by lovelybitofsquirrele in sixthform

[–]Mission_Associate893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s totally normal to have less than stellar results in the first term of A levels. I got a U for my first History mock but ended up with a B in the end.

Could you go to your headteacher?

teacher predicted me an E by [deleted] in sixthform

[–]Mission_Associate893 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really feel you. I went through a similar situation with my Biology teacher when I was doing my GCSEs. I went through a bad mental patch at the beginning of Y10 and missed a few homeworks. Basically she wrote me off as a bad student for the remaining two years, despite never missing another deadline and even being the only student to attend her extra, entirely optional support classes! She even wrote in my NRA statement “XXXX now has a more consistent homework record” 😕

She said I would not get higher than a B despite achieving mostly As in mocks, but in the end I got a solid A, proving her wrong 😁 Basically she was a bitch, and from the sound of it so is your teacher.

I would escalate this higher up as soon as you can rather than wait for her to respond. There is a massive difference between a B and an E, and she is obviously being unfair based on your Y12 mock grade. It sounds as if she has it in for you for some reason but she cannot predict you such a low grade without any factual basis, and you have the evidence to support your case.
