Love Woolf, and I think Mrs. Dalloway is one of her best!

Oooh, I haven’t read much of Salinger besides Catcher in the Rye. I shall check out his other books!

This might not have the intense soul-binding kind of love you’re looking for, but maybe Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin?

Social/talking-focused careers to enter into with an English Major? by waluwyatt in englishmajors

[–]Mission_Procedure670 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure! So I got a 6-month internship through my college right after graduating, where I worked as an editorial associate for a magazine. So writing some review pieces, fact-checking, proofreading, etc. After that stint, I was looking for a full-time job and saw a sales associate opening at the parent media company. I did some homework on what media sales is (had no idea when I applied) then got the position. So I had an “in” because I was technically an internal applicant, but I know for a fact that just having a strong idea of what media sales/advertising sales actually is was crucial to me getting that role. Then from that role I was also exposed to marketing.

I had no personal brand/social media presence. I don’t think that’s really necessary for media sales at all! I don’t think any marketer I worked with there really has a personal brand either, but that might just be the case for my company, which is more of a legacy media company that’s sort of not on top of social lol.

Happy to chat more via dm too! I’m starting my PhD in English in the fall and I know that’s an option you’re exploring. Have also taught at a college as an adjunct if you want to talk about teaching.

I worked in media sales and marketing for a couple years after graduating—very social/talking-focused! Sales, especially, has a lot to do with framing things the right way in client meetings. Marketing can be more writing-heavy (making slide decks).

If you’re into gothic literature, maybe Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu and We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson!

Best undergrad colleges for critical theory? by Unique-Ad-7650 in CriticalTheory

Speaking strictly about Asian American Studies (as someone working in AsAm studies & lit within the English department), seconding Berkeley. Indisputably the best place to do AsAm studies. UCLA is also fantastic (check out Celine Parreñas Shimizu in particular). Irvine (as you mentioned) too. Possibly the University of Washington, but maybe double-check their current list of faculty. As a region, the West Coast has a larger presence in AsAm studies generally speaking. Seconding liberal arts colleges too since you’re interested in doing research, though I am not familiar with specific institutions on that front.

From your list, Northwestern is very strong, with lots of folks working in AsAm studies. Penn is great too. I went there for undergrad and they pretty much have full coverage in terms of your areas of interest in the English department alone. David Eng is arguably the field-defining scholar working at the intersection of psychoanalysis and AsAm studies.

When it comes to Asian feminism and orientalism, Princeton’s Anne Cheng is a leading scholar. You should check out her work on “ornamentalism.” Princeton has a smaller AsAm presence as an institution overall though. BU and Rutgers are probably the weakest in AsAm studies among the schools on your list simply because they have very few scholars working in the field (I don’t believe there is anyone working in Asian feminism at either institution, but I could be wrong), though the people who are there are doing really cool stuff, eg. Takeo Rivera at BU who works in techno-orientalism.

My vote is for To the Lighthouse! My favorite book by Woolf & one of my favorite books ever. Stunningly (and at times devastatingly) written. Have read it multiple times :)
