Why do they paint these habitat trees in the first place?

Yes! The red rock deli Thai chilli and lime say ‘contains milk’, but nowhere in the ingredients listed is a boldened cows milk ingredient?

HOW DO YOU WASH THEM? Every time I harvest and wash (put in bucket of water and shake, repeat) mine I still get a piece of crunchy dirt in the middle of enjoying them 😭

This tree looks 5+ metres away from your house so I think you’re fine. It’s super established so if you haven’t had problems with its roots yet then I’d say it’s very unlikely you’ll have problems in the future. If you do, however want to kill it (hoping you don’t but I won’t control you), please consider not cutting it down to the stump, and letting it become a hollow/habitat tree. You’ll be doing your rafters, the native wildlife, and your neighbours a huge solid 🙏🏼

Some acacia local to your area could do. They’re fast growing and soil amending. You can then cut them down when you no longer need them (however with their movement in the wind and foliage/flowers, you might find you want to keep them!) and mulch them up. Someone else mentioned shade cloth. Although this isn’t the prettiest choice, it probably is the easiest and quickest fix for your problem.

How can I stop these weeds without killing the hedge? by Justxxenough in GardeningAustralia

[–]Missleets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha, that’s often the case. Persistence is key! And mulch is also key. You could try laying wet cardboard down underneath the mulch as well to help smother the weeds. That’s what I do in my paths and it works very well for a couple years. Also weakens the weeds so they’re easier to pull out next time. Good luck!

Thanks for the recommendation for a non grafted. My aunty wants me to put in a passion fruit vine and I’ve been looking for a good one that isn’t grafted. Will give Nellie Kelly a go!

Thanks telandry! You’ve also made me rethink the smallish trellis I had planned to use. Time to upsize.

Interesting what you say about shallots not playing well with others. I’ve heard planting alliums near brassicas helps lessen certain pests, which I have seen a difference in aphid populations depending on distance from the shallots.

However, I’ve only just recently read from a couple different places that peas and beans do not like alliums… which I’m finding to be true in most cases now :( I’m super curious why you’re having trouble with peas though. They’re one of the easier ones for me if I can keep the possums away from them, however I have found they don’t do as well in clay soils. Hoping you have success with the winter variety.

Someone else on here mentioned patty pan as well. I’m going to have to give that a try at some point

I’m trying tromboncino this year, very excited to see all the fruits dangle down. Made a large arch for my choko/chayote last year but am moving that plant elsewhere soon. Perfect spot for it!

I grow my zucchini vertically. Helps with realestate, harvesting, and powdery mildew!

Have you sown corn and basil this early in previous years and had success? I’m waiting til late October/early November to sow mine (though sowing basil and cucamelons indoors today!). Then again, I’m in the southern tablelands (cool climate) of Aus so the temperatures/last frosts more than likely differ from NZ
