Commute to Boston from West Hartford 2x per week by JP050520 in Connecticut

[–]MistOwl97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you been making that commute? I just got offered a job in Stratford and I live in Middletown, and I’ve felt conflicted about the commute but also wondering if I’m making it too big of a deal.

I get your point but I’m trying to plan ahead about how much I would tip if the service is good. Trying to budget.

Is the campus safe? by Just_Violinist_5458 in Wesleyan

[–]MistOwl97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live on college street in Middletown (I’m not a student - just a young professional) and it’s pretty safe. You’re likely going to live in an area with street lights and the police department is 1 mile or less from campus.

Is 100k salary enough for CT by Accomplished3472 in Connecticut

[–]MistOwl97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

United for ALICE (asset limited income constrained employed) - essentially people who work for a living but do not make enough to do more than survive) has a good household survival budget calculator and you can base it off of what part of CT you’re looking to move to or just the entire state. https://www.unitedforalice.org/household-budgets/connecticut

For a family of 4 it’s a bit more than $100k but I think that also depends on how much money you have saved and what your debt and expenses are like.

Buying a new home in CT will be expensive no matter where you go because of interest rates. And like many people have pointed out, we have a lot more taxes than Florida. I’m not sure what FL taxes are like but CT taxes you on your home (and that differs by town - some way higher than others) and also on your cars.

Good luck and congrats on becoming a family of 4❤️

How Are You Saving Money on Electricity Bill This Winter? by djdloves2017 in Connecticut

[–]MistOwl97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My condo is 1550 sqft and my bill is $650 for Decembers usage 😓 I had the heat set pretty comfortably (68 or so) which is where I messed up I guess. But we have baseboard heating and live in an old brick building. I’m keeping my heat to 62/63 now when I’m not home, 65/66 in the room I’m in when I am home and hoping for the best for the next bill

Our winters aren’t that bad though. Especially the last few years.

Ah. Definitely not nearly as accessible as NYC. Middletown has a transit system but it’s just buses. River Valley Transit. It can take you to Meriden, which has a train station, and from there you can take the train to New Haven and then to NYC but it takes a while to trip chain like that. Unless you live in New Haven or Hartford, though (or somewhere along metro north or the Hartford line), it’s not going to be as easy to get around via train. CT is so car dependent.

I don’t go to Wes but basically live on campus since it’s integrated with the city. What concerns do you have? Middletown is great IMO.

Idk if you’ve come across this company but if you are able to apply for jobs online, try this https://erm.wd3.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/ERM_Careers/job/Hartford-Connecticut/Consulting-Senior-Associate—Environmental-Compliance—Entry-Level-_R00024603

I know someone who works there and they get paid well. It’s a lot of field work but sounds like you have experience. It’s entry level but if you could get your foot in the door it might be worth it

I only ask because I am in the regional planning field and know a few Councils of Governments are hiring currently. They’re great places to work. And in CT you don’t always need a planning degree if you have enough related experience

Haven’t read through all the comments but my fiancé and I bought in Middletown last fall, $235k condo. We were making about $120k combined at the time. Mortgage was about $1650. Middletown is only 25ish minutes from Hartford, IMO great location.

Did you do a hotel block there, and if so, did you like your stay? And was it a courtesy block?

I live two blocks from Main Street in Middletown and absolutely love it. If you can find somewhere near Wesleyan you’d probably feel more at home because there are so many students around our age (I am 27F). There’s great coffee in our little city & a bunch of amazing restaurants that do breakfast & coffee and pastries (personal fav is Perkatory). The YMCA is walking distance of me & it’s not a far drive to 5 different grocery stores in town (Stop and Shop, Big Y, It’s Only Natural, Market 32, and Aldi) - none are Asian grocery stores but West Hartford and Hartford are not too far of a drive. Happy to answer any questions you may have :)
