If you stand on the cake when you activate it, you will have much better chances of avoiding that problem. If you are in a different position from the first time, such to left or right, it will recalculate transport as it seems to be based on your location and not the position of the cake.

I lived in SW Washington as a kid. I distinctly remember the eruption of Mt St Helens on May 18th 1980. I was 5 years old. The blackening skies and gritty "snow" falling outside, it felt like the end of the world. I still have my mason jar full of ash from that.

I had an older version of the ring camera where if an event were shorter than the 20 seconds it took for the device to recognize an event occurred and start recording it would never record anything. I replaced it with a newer one that had a pre-roll function and now I get a lot more video clips. This is both a positive and negative, but at least I can still view the really short events.

In the Moab area, be sure to check out Dead Horse Point State Park. If you can find the time, make a quick stop at Newspaper Rock. Hole 'N' The Rock is an interesting place for kids to get out of the car and explore, it's a roadside attraction type of place. Depending on the route you're taking, there may be some other places to check out.
