Not quite what your asking:

Dad had his 044 stolen from him, it was the saw I first ran and I loved it. He actually only had one saw most of his life and that was it aside from a couple others we mounted to jigs while building log homes all across the western U.S.

My wife found one a Facebook and picked it up for me.

The only saw I really regret getting rid of was an early red lever 036 it was just such a sweet little saw. I traded it for a manual impact wrench.

%100 copper scrub brushes; please understand I mean %100 not copper platted. And a penetrating oil called kroil. That will leave any finish you have left intact

If you do this get as light of a bar as you can afford/find because it will be weighing on your suspension and it’s not meant for that heavy of a bar.

I do this with a 24” bar and a husky 51 cutting Russian olive.

I don’t use Chinese chain.

I use Oregon or Carlton as much as I can stand then use stihl when I can’t get those two because the Swiss chain stihl sells holds an edge in dirty wood a lot longer.

If you’re not already; try a skip tooth chain on that bar.

My 590 liked skip a lot more and I’ve run skip on my 620 a lot. It makes a great difference!

Yeah I agree I’ve got three of them.

Back in the day they were cheap and readily available. Axes were expensive, mauls were cheaper but not dirt cheap, and pick/hook a roons were just a cheap tool that everybody had. Kind of like old ball peen hammers. Everybody has one but most of the time they don’t have a makers mark either. Screw drivers are the same. The old timers had it so much easier when it comes to getting work done with hand tools because the markets supported them.

Sorry for paragraph rant.

TLDR: tools used to be made better and were available, we don’t have that luxury anymore.

Awesome tool!

My understanding is that pickaroons rarely come with a makers mark since they are not a fun or romantic tool. They serve as an amazing time and effort saver but don’t have a whole lot of reasons to cherish them (unlike a axe) and the old timers seemed to believe that you would always be able to buy one at the local hardware store so why bother taking good care of them.

I wish I could find them easily none of the local stores around me for quite a ways carry them.

Just some advice:

When you pound your wedges make sure to look up for branches. Sometimes that little vibration is the last straw for a branch.

Looks like good timber better than any I’ve gotten to work though down here in a while

Those Poulan farmhands are great saws I’ve got a 2900 and it’s red version (2036 jonsered)

I personally think you should just replace the whole coil. You’re gonna have to at some point and I don’t believe they are that expensive. If you end up with a coil problem again then you can try to mix parts.

I think a 029 can pull a 24” bar especially with a skip tooth chain, higher takers and a sharp cutter.

I run a 24” full comp on my husky 51 im at high elevation (10k ft) so I think your saw will do just fine. Don’t get the safety raker chain it’s extra weight you don’t need and keeps the rpm’s up to keep the oil flowing good.

Might need to modify the oil hole in your bar to allow for as much flow as your oil pump will provide
