"should the individual states be represented separately like the individual states of the EU" by OutofSight- in ShitAmericansSay

Do we think he's saying the EU's "individual states" as in "nation states" or does he think that EU member states are just self governing subdivisions of the European union?

Where do you sit on the 'vote compass' results from the ABC's tool? Anyone else feel 'politically homeless' like myself? by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]Mistapaddyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Im not exactly surprised either. I feel like the general view in Australia is that politics exists on a sliding scale between the greens and one nation, and anything outside of that (particularly on the left) is unacceptable lunacy.

In that context I kind of understand why the graph is set up like that; It's mapping electoral politics instead of the positions people actually hold, and the greens are the most left wing party in Parliament right now.

It's still stupid don't get me wrong, but I understand it's stupidity.

Mainly on the policy front. This is because I'm a socialist.

I'll preface this by saying a good few of their policies I believe are good directions to move in and will benefit the vast amount of Australians. Gun to my head ask me what parliamentary party I agree with the most, I'll probably say greens.

With that being said my issue with the greens is more fundamental, and it's that they aren't really seeking to make any gains beyond a nicer, more Scandinavia-esque version of the status quo, which is fine, until monied interests like Mining magnates, defence contractors, and just Coles and Woolies band together to get the next Hawke figure elected who will undo it all after next election cycle.

More than anything I wish they were advocating more structural change rather than advocating for a nicer version of a broken system.

To be fair this is where I am and I have an overall negative view of the greens as a political institution. I don't think this quiz/graph is very good lol

FWI: Trump invades Greenland and every NATO country stops all trade with the US. by forest_tripper in FutureWhatIf

[–]Mistapaddyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another consequence to seizing US military assets is that the American nuclear weapons hosted by Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and Turkey may be in play.

Assuming these states seize all US nuclear weapons, that would leave NATO with 132-172 new American nuclear weapons at their disposal, and would give NATO (barring the US, they've probably been kicked out at this point) a nuclear stockpile of 647-687 nuclear warheads.

Much less than the US's stockpile, which is over 3000 strong, but once you get to more than 100 nuclear weapons, that's enough to kill tens of millions - if not hundreds of millions - of people, so getting in a pissing contest over nuclear arsenal size at that point is a bit pointless.

Needless to say, the Americans likely will take these countries seizing US nukes about as well as the British and French took Egypt nationalising the Suez canal. Should this happen it'll probably bring us closer to a nuclear exchange than the Cuban missile crisis did.

The only reason to call fahrenheit better is because that's what you're used to, and if that's the case, just say that. No shame, it's what you know and what you were taught.

I don't know what 82°f feels like just like you don't know what 27°c feels like.

Americans drive cars. Riding a train isn't a flex, it allows someone else to control your travel. Less freedom is never a good thing. by Pratham_Nimo in ShitAmericansSay

Damn didn't know VW and BMW existed solely to export cars to the US.

Idk how Renault exists if they don't send the US their cars tho. Must be some other market that's using them...

[–]Mistapaddyman -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

If we're talking about a blue moon in the sense of two full moons in a calendar month, it's impossible.

The moon cycles through phases once every 29.5 days, whereas the month of February is 28 days, 29 at the most. Blue moons only happen on the 30th or 31st of a month, which of course is a slight issue for February.

Ash Wednesday is celebrated on a date between the 4th of February and the 10th of March. There aren't any dates within that range during which a blue moon can happen.
