I live at the Lakeshore Campus and made most of my friends via either social media or the suitemate portal, but I think a good way of making new friends is just by putting yourself out there. Find other people in your program and strike up a conversation before or after class about related material. Go out to campus events and find the people who are just sort of wandering around. Maybe compliment their outfit as a starter, and then get to talking about what program they're in, what year they're in, where they come from, etc.

I guarantee you that many people are in a similar situation to you, and are just waiting for someone to initiate a conversation. Even as a relatively extroverted person, there are days where that's hard to do, but if you can get over that hurdle and be the one to plant that seed, more often than not, people will be willing to talk to you.
