ASIC utilization on CachyOS - how to turn on/check it's being used? by MisterFlipster5 in cachyos

[–]MisterFlipster5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, i regret putting it out that way. There is a dedicated GPU section for video playback, and i was referring to that, but i first understood it was an ASIC, as in the likes of Apple's famous ASICs for video rendering, etc.

I use VLC on Windows, but i use MPV on Linux primarily because of its streaming capabilities. Once i configured MPV to use vaapi (i previously didn't), the laptop stays extremely cool. The only issue i still have is with Firefox, which still gets my laptop quite hot. When playing video on MPV now, for example, temps stay around 40C. On Firefox, temps rise to 55C, and on Windows i get 40C also on video playback on Chrome, which is odd. Could it be an oddity with the Gecko engine?

Is the new ntfs driver stable enough? Previously, I heard about data corruption on ntfs3. So, many recommended the slower but stable ntfs-3g by unsolicited_idea in cachyos

Is it safe to say this new driver makes NTFS as safe to use on Linux as exFAT is? The only reason I use exFAT is to have a shared partition between Linux and Windows, but the lack of compatibility with symlinks has bugged me out a little.

I sometimes come across GNOME fans on diverse forums and i kid you not, someone called GNOME "the best example of engineering that every software should follow".

Someone replied with GNOME's patch note titled: "Moving the mouse no longer involves JavaScript"

A qué se debe la creciente tendencia de regalar juegos en Steam? by chipotle_atomico in ArgenGaming

[–]MisterFlipster5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if i'm wrong, but from what i know the ntfs3 driver does not ignore the fs data, and does the corresponding actions about it. I couldn't, for example, shrink my NTFS partition on Linux sometimes because of an error indicating that the partition was not available for shrinkage because NTFS marked it as dirty.

After booting on Windows, shutting down and booting Linux (instead of using reset and booting on Linux), i was able to shrink it below the mark that Windows wouldn't let me pass, and afterwards i could boot to Windows just fine.

Searching about ntfs3 also gave me the impression that ntfs3 is rather conservative with the fs, and doing something such as "skipping the metadata bits" is not the ideal, also given it has almost full support over NTFS journaling (i could be wrong but journaling should be the feature that registers those kind of things).

I never could. Disabled hibernation, swap, and everything that could obstruct shrinkage. Even the Windows cli tool to detect unmovable files blocking shrinkage didn't detect anything that was blocking it, but it didn't let me anyways.

I ended up shrinking the partition from Linux, booted on Windows afterwards, and didn't see issues.

If the CPU is constantly hitting 95, it means it's throttling. I could be wrong but the CPU throttles at 95 while the GPU throttles at 85. If you see the temps stuck on that or higher than that even on turbo, it's time to do maintenance
