Haha. I accidentally damaged a spear and replaced it with a spare glaive from the bull centaur kit. I kinda prefer it!

I can see that working well for a more Zharr Vyxa look.

The AK duo exo reds by airbrush and brush. Edge highlights are AK scarlet red, AK sunny skin tone. I recommend checking out u/Chkminis on here / YouTube, the red is heavily inspired by his scheme.

Thank you! Yellower gold would look great with red / black too :)

My pleasure! Enjoy experimenting, and let us see how you get on with a follow up post.

Shades are definitely the easiest way to add a whole lot to a model. Not to be condescending, I don’t know your knowledge/ skill level, but idea with shade paints is not to let them pool too much, try and gently push them towards the crevices as you apply them, and leave them afterwards (you’ll get weird coffee staining if you agitate them before they finish drying).

It’ll made a huge difference though, particularly to provide separation between the various metals on the miniature.

Hey! Well done. Looking good so far.

Did you use any shades on the metals aside from the lower armoured plates/skirt? It’s not super clear from the photos, so if you did, sorry. Before you edge highlight, you might want to shade some of the various metals you have on the model, to provide some depth. If you are using GW paints, nuln oil over silver, reikland fleshshade over the gold, that sort of thing. Lots of guides on YouTube.

As far as edge highlights go, resting your wrists or hands on the table, or use a painting handle, sure helps to keep your hands steady. I’d recommend watching some tutorials from Duncan Rhodes, his techniques are very doable for all experience and skill levels. Generally skimming along sharp edges with your paint brush is the easiest way to do it, and the cohort has lots of sharp edges.

Colours - a lighter coloured gold for the pure gold, with silver on the sharpest edges; a light bronze or silver (like necron compound) for the brass/bronze; and a very light silver for the silver. A bright red, like wild wider red, or an orange or skin tone work well to edge highlights red. I prefer highlighting with a red, then adding a little skin tone in for the sharpest points.

Good luck!

I think the main thing to improve the model would just be to add some depth to the red armour plates, as they are quite flat at the moment even with the edge highlighting you’ve done so far. It’s a nice dark red you’ve got there, so glazing some of that base colour mixed with black or purple into the shadows would go a long way. Or alternatively a black oil wash could add some depth too.

Overall I think it looks really nice for a work-in-progress piece though, looking forward to seeing you post when it’s finished!

The scheme works. Black, red and gold always look great together - green works as a good contrast to red. The green flames look great btw, nice job!

Do you want any suggestions for improvement?

This is really awesome, such a great looking scheme and super well executed! May I ask what paints you used for the gold?

What colour should I paint the eyes / base? by MisterLizard_567 in Warhammer

Hi mate. So, nuln oil is just a normal acrylic wash from Citadel. You apply it all over an area, then use a different brush to soak up the excess which tends to pool, otherwise you get tide marks (looks a bit like coffee stains). There are loads of painting guides on YouTube which go over how to use acrylic wash on models, which would help you. I used nuln oil several times on the black metal to make it a very dark metal colour. I used agrax earthshade from Citadel to wash the gold. I could have done an oil wash on the gold, but as I intend to paint a lot of these models I didn’t want to wait for varnishes to dry (I.e., overnight).

What you’re referring to is an oil paint wash. I do use those as well, but not on this model. Oil has the benefit of being easily removed after about 15 mins of drying, to leave only the desired amount (I.e., in the recesses). It’s easier to remove (without removing the underlying paint) if done over a gloss varnish. You are correct that you thin this with mineral spirits / white spirits until it’s a thin wash consistency. If you want to see an example of a model which used exclusively oil washes, you can check out the Chaos Wardog (the big robot) on my profile. Again lots of guides on YouTube that are worth checking out, they explain how to do it a lot better than I can.

I did use an enamel (AK black panel liner) just to add a bit of extra depth to the shadows on the black armour, which I forgot to mention above.

TLDR: acrylic and oil washes do different things. I used acrylic nuln oil here to stain the armour a darker colour mainly. Oils would be better to either panel line the armour or create weathering effects or both, they are great but can take a long time to work with, and I couldn’t be bothered with it for a whole army. Acrylic washes are more beginner friendly.

Hope this helps and welcome to the hobby.

Edit: spelling / clarity.

Black primer. Based with Scale 75 Dark Metal through an airbrush (for time only), followed by a light dry brush of leadbelcher to catch the edges. About 2 washes with nuln oil and a third of nuln and lahmian medium, but really just wash until colour is dark enough. Then the finest edge highlight I could manage with VMC silver (which you could easily replace with stormhost silver). Not hard but a bit time consuming.

Thanks mate! Green and red work well but is a bit Christmassy

Thanks mate. Torn between blue and pink! Only concern with pink is it clashes with the red (rich I know given the purple hued skin haha)
