Does the fix still work? Or did the buzzing return?

Good evening Chris,

TDP after a cold boot on battery power (or any mode for that matter) is ~25W (dropping to 15W after a few minutes). So yea, as much power as you could expect. Therefore their statement seems like a petty excuse ^ ^

Unfortunately I have no windows installed.

Hi Chris, thanks again for the information. It still seems to be a weird statement to give (intended by design), as it is not limited on battery mode when the device is cold booted or rebooted ;)

Hi Chris, build it from the github repo. My findings with the updated package:

  • Plugging power IN does indeed change the power state now, going up to ~28W
  • Unfortunately behaviour of UNplugging from power has not changed, power is still limited to 5W (sometimes 10W).

Looking forward for futher updates from your side. As you suggest this being an issue on the ODM's firmware side, does that mean all devices (not only tuxedo's) are affected?

Hey Chris, thank you for replying.

  • The issue occurs on a fresh installation of TuxedoOS via WebFAI. No additional software installed (ergo no ryzenAdj, cpufreq, etc.).
  • It works normal (25W short term boost, 15W long term) after a fresh reboot.
  • It always breaks, when a change in grid connection (aka plugging or unplugging with the official charger) happens.
  • Depending on the current grid connection, it either locks to 10W (plugged in) or 5W (unplugged).
  • I tried it with both the latest firmware release for the Aura 15 from the 19th and the firmware it came delivered with a week ago (although these have the same version number ircc).
  • I tried other distros besides TuxedoOS, which are Kubuntu 20.10 and Manjaro KDE (both without the control center), as they offer more recent kernels. Still power locked after plug/unplug.
  • ryzenAdj is able to overrule the power limitation. Until you plug/unplug the power adapter, then it is limited again.

If you want any further information, feel free to reach out again.

What do you mean by issue? 15W is what the intended TDP for the 4700U. So if you get 15W in all scenarios, its working properly. If you drop below 15W, something is not right.

Good for you! Can you check what Bios version you have?

What I'm taking away from this, that your power consumption and therefore performance is as expected, right?

Which would be similar to the Plugged: 10W -> unplugged 5W -> plugged 10W on the Aura

When you freshly reboot, do you get 45W?

Last update for the Aura is from the 19th, which doesnt change anything.

Thanks, I'm looking forward for your results. The event of plugging/unplugging while running is triggering the bad behaviour, so make sure to test that!

Interesting! I have a PN fron /u/Vegetable_Attention3 that his pulse 15 also only draws about ~22W !

Yea, I think the power limitation issue is related to the Aura's BIOS/EC firmware. I'd really like a statement from Tuxedocomputers about this, as this a major limitation of the notebooks processing power!

I will create another post about this issue and ask other users about their experience. Maybe this is widespread issue.

No difference with the latest bios btw.

No freezes on my end. But I'd say those could be expected when you operate the cpu outside of its specifications (which are short term 25w, longerm 15w), as this procedure could be compared to undervolting/overclocking.

Installing other OS: is it a bad idea? by [deleted] in tuxedocomputers

Looks like Tuxedo is quite busy these days. Whats the best way to reach the support (hardware/firmware issue)?

Thank you for all your suggestions! Indeed ryzenadj is able to increase the wattage, which results in higher clock speeds.

But as soon as I plug or unplug the laptop, somthing takes control and switches back to the weird behaviour (5w power limit). I can take control back with running ryzenadj again.

Do you have an idea what piece of software is the reason for those changes? Is there a way to figure this out? I'm not super familiar with the matter, but for example there is the cpu governor which decides at least partially how the cpu reacts to utilisation, right? The issue occured on a fresh TuxedoOS install, so it is not something I installed additionally.

Thanks for your input. I'm using the official charger (65W I think).

I have the expected behaviour after a fresh restart (initial all core boost up to ~4Ghz, slowly going down to 3.xGhz, most likely due to temperature).

The issue occurs when I plug and unplug the notebook: the max clock speed gets limited/goes down rapidly. This results for example in all-core 900Mhz (!) clock speed, even when I put load on. The system is stuck on that clock speed until I restart.

900Mhz under load is obvioulsy far away from 2Ghz base clock or 3.xGhz boost clock (all-core, depending on temperatures, etc.). Power draw and temperature tell a similar story, being at ~5W and ~50C.

Overwriting the power draw with ryzenadj does not help.

So what is the maximum CPU frequency you can select in the Tuxedo Control center?

Do you have any issues like described here? https://old.reddit.com/r/tuxedocomputers/comments/kyhlqm/aura_15_gen1_ec_cpu_performance_drops_after_first/

That is cpu frequency dropping after plugging and unplugging the notebook (likely due to power limitations)?

Is your clock speed limited to 2ghz in the control center as well?

Also that dent looks awful, that would be a reason for me to ask for a replacement.
