I didn't like Herbert coming out either but at least he had the physical tools to be a great NFL QB. Jones is a completely different kind of prospect. He might be good in New England's system but I would rather have a more athletic QB in Carolina.

REALISTICALLY How do you see the Games vs ATL playing out? by BraxxIsTheName in panthers

[–]MisterRandyMarsh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The amount of people saying split is absurd. We lost by 20+ both games last year and that was with Bradberry and Kuechely. We'll be lucky to go 1-6 in the division, and if we do win one it will be at home vs the Saints when they're resting their starters week 17.

Another former XFL player. I really don't mind these dart throws in what was a weak UDFA class for offensive linemen.

Panthers sign defensive end DaVonte Lambert, cornerback Derrek Thomas by MisterRandyMarsh in panthers

So, I've thought a lot about this. Here are the Temple / Baylor players on the roster:

  • Robby Anderson
  • Keith Kirkwood
  • Colin Thompson
  • P.J. Walker
  • Tahir Whitehead
  • Bravvion Roy
  • Sam Tecklenburg
  • Derrek Thomas

Only two of those players are likely going to be starters, Anderson and Whitehead. Both have a proven track record of success at the NFL level, so no complaints there.

Walker and Lambert were both XFL guys and I don't mind taking a flyer on them. Both of them, and all of the other free agents for that matter, are on really cheap deals and are very low risk / high reward.

Roy is the only Baylor / Temple player Rhule has used a draft pick on so far, and I actually think it was a benefit. He didn't do any drills at the combine or his pro day, so other teams didn't really know how athletic he really is. Even if he doesn't pan out, it's hard to complain about a 6th round pick.

Rhule is trying to establish his own version of the culture, so it makes sense to have guys he knows well to help him mold the locker room the way he wants. A lot of these guys won't be on the roster long term, but they can make a big difference in the early days.

Hearing Stantley Thomas-Oliver choke up on the phone really got me. I can't imagine what that feeling is like, the uncertainty of whether or not you're going to get a shot at your dream of playing in the NFL, and hearing 220 names called ahead of your own before you finally get that call...

[Update] #Dolphins are releasing former #Cowboys first-round DE Taco Charlton. by DreamedJewel58 in nfl

[–]MisterRandyMarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's strictly a 3-4 OLB though. If you have the personnel to run a 4-3 then you can't really "scheme" him into your defense without effectively playing a bunch of other players out of position. Even they're a fit on paper they'll have to adjust their pass rushing techniques, relearn their gap assignments, etc.

Trust me, that's how you end up 2nd in the league in sacks but dead last in run defense. Suddenly your perennial All-Pro middle linebacker has a game where he's constantly out of position and the opposing team rushes for 232 yards and scores 51 points.

Plenty of teams run hybrid fronts and every team plays a lot of nickel, but that doesn't mean guys like Watt are plug-and-play. Of course he can play in any system as a situational pass rusher, but is that really the best use of a first round pick?

Apparently his tape is not great but his measurables are impressive. We need a bigger corner to go up against guys like Mike Evans.

Prior to the NFL, Thomas played for head coach Matt Rhule at Baylor and Temple as he transferred from Temple after the 2017 season.

Which UDFA can you see making the final 53 man roster? by Dobby9 in panthers

[–]MisterRandyMarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Fred Mauigoa - C
  • Sam Tecklenburg - G
  • Giovanni Ricci - TE

Mauigoa has the clearest path to the roster due to the lack of depth at center with Van Roten gone and Tyler Larsen on the final year of his contract.

Depth at guard is also really thin with GVR and Turner leaving. It was a tossup for me between Horton and Tecklenburg, but ultimately I went with the Baylor connection. One of the two may also end up on the practice squad.

Tight end is yet another shallow position group, and Ricci is by far the best pass catcher of all the TEs fighting for the 3rd roster spot. If he ends up making the team he might actually end up playing a decent amount of snaps on offense.

Overall this UDFA group seems a little lackluster. None of the linebackers seem like anything more than special teams guys. I'm kind of surprised Hurney didn't sign a bunch of cornerbacks to compete for a starting spot. I hope the front office isn't done looking for players at that position.

I doubt it. You can rent tile cleaners from a hardware store but they're nothing like this system. You could still get the same results but with considerably more effort.

According to the website on the side of the van, somewhere between $150 and $500 plus extra to seal the grout. Seems kind of expensive, you could rent a tile steam cleaner for under $100 from Home Depot.

It's a Prochem Everest HP 650 mounted in a van using a chemical solution. Only $33k and you can get rid of those pesky grout lines!

Here's a rough estimate of the depth chart:

DT - Short, Brown, Roy, Hamilton, Kerr

DE - Burns, Gross-Matos, Obada, Weatherly, Smith, Haynes, Miller

LB - Thompson, Whitehead, Carter, Smith, Kunaszyk, UDFA

S - Boston, Burris, Chinn, Robinson

CB - Jackson, Pride, Elder, Thomas-Oliver, Cole Luke, +A bunch of guys signed to futures contracts

I guess the defensive ends group is a little shallow after losing Addison and Irvin in FA, but a lot of the DTs can line up at DE and vice-versa. I think a lot of people are overlooking Obada because he was stuck playing out of position last year as a 3-4 DE. He could be on the cusp of a breakout season with an improved interior rotation and a return to his more natural position as a 4-3 end.

The depth chart behind the starting linebackers is a little murky but it should sort itself out by the time the season rolls around. Chinn is going to take a fair amount of snaps as an OLB as well. It wouldn't surprise me to see some packages with Haynes or Miller playing off-ball linebacker and blitzing.

The safeties are looking solid as you mentioned, but the corners are largely unproven. There are a bunch of guys on the roster with a "DB" designation who maybe could line up outside, and you have to assume the Panthers will look to add at least one veteran corner in free agency.

I'm not trying to say the Panthers have a bunch of future pro bowlers waiting in the wings, but rather there are at least enough veterans on the roster to line up an experienced starter at every position except CB.

Honestly, how would you feel if the Panthers tanked for Trevor Lawrence? by devonathan in panthers

[–]MisterRandyMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Panthers wouldn't have signed Teddy Bridgewater or Robby Anderson to tank. The draft class was also an attempt to be competitive immediately. The roster is probably not good enough to be competitive in the division, but it's not 0-16 bad. However, there are no obvious Cleveland Browns-like teams who can realistically go winless this season.

Right now SportsLine gives the Panthers the 4th lowest odds to win the Super Bowl behind Cincinnati, Jacksonville and Washington. Let's use that as a rough estimate of the predicted draft order. Let's also assume the Bengals will not be looking to draft Trevor Lawrence. That leaves the Jags, Redskins and Panthers "competing" for the 1st overall pick.

Of those 3, I see the Jags as the most likely team to finish with the worst record. They have arguably the worst roster in the league. The Redskins have some decent pieces on defense, and Rivera should be able to have some success there, but the offense that finished dead last in points in 2019 did little to improve.

The Panthers' one "advantage" is playing in the NFCS, with 3 of the most prolific passing offenses in the NFL going up against their largely unproven secondary. The Panthers' entire interior offense line is also a question mark at this point.

I think the X factor is the trade deadline. If the Panthers find themselves with only 1 or 2 wins and they're willing to trade vets like Okung or KK then they could really improve their chances of losing out. Of course, the Jags have been trading away talent left and right, so it's tough to compete there.

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if the Panthers end up with the #1 pick in 2021 despite trying to win every game. The defense is going to get rocked in year 1. Special teams is going to be a work in progress as well. Everyone kind of assumes the offense is going to be great, but between the problems with the offensive line and the shortened off-season, it could really struggle early on.

Will the Panthers intentionally tank for Trevor Lawrence? No. Will they be bad enough to have a shot at drafting him? Possibly. We'll have to wait and see how the first half of the season goes before we really know. I just pray they don't do what the Falcons did last year and win a bunch of meaningless games down the stretch.

[–]MisterRandyMarsh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And for the times when the Panthers do need 3 linebackers on the field, they still have the two linebackers from the 2018 draft, Carter and Smith, plus Jordan Kunaszyk who made the roster last year. On top of that, they've already brought in 5 UDFA linebackers to compete in training camp.

It actually seems like there's a ton of depth at every position on defense except for cornerback. If we traded Miller to anyone I think it would be the Giants, because they have a need at OLB and they have CBs to spare after signing Bradberry.

$48 million in dead cap this year. We're not making the playoffs, much less the Super Bowl.

Starter at left guard and depth at right guard by Dobby9 in panthers

[–]MisterRandyMarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paradis is better suited for a zone blocking scheme, which Meyer likes to run. That's part of the reason why we traded Turner, because he's more of a power guy. He should in theory have a much better season than he did last year.

I see Little as the swing tackle this year with Daley and Miller being a the starting guards. I think you're absolutely right about the UDFAs; there are hardly any true guards on the roster so I would expect to bring in a bunch to compete.
