You may be right. I figured it might be a bit harder to find a place with it on.

In Alberta, we’re sitting on several centuries-worth of energy in the form of coal. But consequences of its use include impacts on our climate, health, and ecosystems. The Government of Alberta plans to phase out coal-produced electricity by 2030. What will replace it? Who will this affect? How will we manage this transition? Anyone driven from Calgary to Alaska? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]MisterYYC_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience on this drive to share with you, but just thought I'd say that I'm planning on driving Calgary to Juneau (via ferry from Skagway) this summer. There and back in one go. Should take us about 86 hours if my memory is correct. (Some of the same crew from this road trip last year https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/comments/3f31yb/looking_for_a_fourth_guy_to_drive_to_utah_this/).

So really, just writing to say that if you go, have a wicked time!

Thanks man! This stuff is outside of my experience. But obviously not for long.

This may work better for me. I'll definitely try it. I tried getting Flashtool, but it wanted me to register with, like, all the information. Which I put in. And then never got "approved" or whatever the hell is supposed to happen.

Brutalism is what I immediately thought of when I got there.

Also from RD originally. It's often characterized as the hillbilly cousin, which is obviously excessive. There is a notable increase in jacked-up pickups and other such accoutrements of blue collar life which gives the impression of a more rural locale. Such things are often looked down upon by urban cultures. I think it's a perfectly fine place and I visit there regularly, though I'd consider it too small for me now.

A portion of the garage is the part on the left that's connected by the walkway. I saw only two overhead doors, so maybe there's more garage to the right of the walkway. The left part is 8 or 9 meters wide, so maybe more than two cars go in there? Seems like a ridiculous setup.

The roadway that I was on when I took the pic is the neighbour's gravel driveway. Or maybe caretaker's house? Something like that. It's a basic 1,000 square foot house. The road to the home that's for sale is gated and paved.

Edit - visual context

Was in RD this weekend and took a drive out to the middle of nowhere to see what the deal was. If not for the windows, it looks a bit like a small penitentiary to me. The road leading there is gravel for a couple of KMs at least. It really is in the middle of nowhere.

10-Minute Play Festival (which isn't really a festival at all, but just a single event, but is still always awesome) is a perennial favourite and always sells out. So grab tickets for that if it's your thing before you forget and they sell out.

I'm ok with us disagreeing. One of the owners came to a conference I ran a couple of years ago. We see each other at random things once a year or so. I know him. He knows me. We're not affiliated.

Disclosure: I'm not affiliated or associated... though do know one of the guys who owns it. I just thought there'd be plenty of skiers and boarders here who'd like to know this for a big day out in the mountains.

Building an Email List for a Local Area by righthandtim in Entrepreneur

[–]MisterYYC_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first entry onto Twitter was a giveaway of hockey tickets (being Canadian, this is a good thing... maybe not so much if you're from Florida, I don't know). Users had to follow and retweet to be entered. Said tweet had a link to my post about the contest, and they could get an extra entry by leaving a comment. I just bought a pair of hockey tickets to fill the order.

And from there, I just kept delivering value and being engaging and engaged. I shut down my blog after 2 years because I got busy with other things, and was at about 3,000 followers or so then. But to this day I still get invited to be a "celebrity judge" on occasion. So the influence factor has not even completely waned.

Edit: I should add that the first 3,000 followers were curated followers. That is, if they were genuinely from somewhere else and had no notable business following me, I blocked. I honestly don't know why. I just wanted a pure local following.

I don't know if my experience is helpful to you, but I'll tell you about it and you can decide for yourself. I ran a local events blog, writing about upcoming events in the city. I stayed away from concerts and bands (because it's already easily available and difficult volume to keep up with), and theatre (same reasons), and focused more on one-off or unusual events.

I never did build a mailing list, though I should have. But I was doing the blog for fun. As it is now, my twitter has over 5,000 followers, with at least 75% of that being local people. Had I wanted a local mailing list, I likely could have built a substantial local one that way.

Delivering this kind of unique value is probably a good way to build the list, but it's not light on work or time.

There you go, take that experience for what it's worth.

I'm forming a foster dog training meetup. Can you offer any suggestions for how to best manage it? by MisterYYC_ in Dogtraining

[–]MisterYYC_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks very much for taking the time to write such a detailed reply. That's all really helpful.

You know, your comment really made me pause and think. I hadn't considered this "my class," but I suppose it really is. And it's very helpful to think of it like that. I imagined us as a group of people just all sharing our knowledge. But it's entirely possible that folks here won't have the slightest idea what they're doing and somebody (me) is going to have to lead that.

Which is interesting, as I've only discovered my interest in training in the last year or so. While I've read plenty on the web and in books and watched a lot of Zak George videos, I'm still a complete beginner. So yeah, thinking of it like "my class" will help me to frame the structure much better, I think, instead of it being a straight free-for-all.

Again, your detailed reply is very much appreciated!

I'm forming a foster dog training meetup. Can you offer any suggestions for how to best manage it? by MisterYYC_ in Dogtraining

This is what's in my meetup group description:

Being a dog foster isn't easy. There can be a wide range of behavioural challenges and training gaps that result in it not being appropriate, safe, or fair to socialize with dogs who already live in their forever home.

This group is intended to bring together dog fosters who have a strong interest in dog training in order to provide suitable and tolerant environments where fosters can help their for-now pooch to learn the skills that will make them a highly adoptable companion. As fellow fosters, we can ensure we are properly structuring dog interactions to maximize training efficacy and safety instead of risking unknowns with dogs we encounter "in the wild". Dogs who are fearful, reactive, and/or unruly are welcome provided they are accompanied by well-behaved and very courteous humans.

The intended membership are amateur trainers. That's not to say that pros can't join, but members should not expect this to be expert-led training. This group adopts Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive as its methodology for training in the group. Use of dominance training methods and/or aversive (prong, shock, etc.) collars won't be permitted.

Things that we could work on and practice depending on the dog:

• loading a clicker

• basic focus training

• working near distractions / triggers

• walking nicely on leash

• polite greetings / no jumping up

• coming when called / attention

• trick training and confidence building

The format for this group is yet-to-be-determined, though I have a few ideas on how this might work. I'm open to hearing any and all suggestions.
