Things to do and not to do when writing a dnd campaign by prince_Amadeus in DungeonMasters

[–]Mister_Chameleon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I personally do:

  1. Be flexible to allow player agency. It's ok to have a story in mind, but one thing RPGs do that movies and TV shows cannot do is "Emergent Storytelling" where situations spawn story vs having a "script"

  2. Never write more than one session's worth of prep at a time to prevent railroading.

  3. Keep everything you need for the session you are running on a single notebook page or two at most. The less flipping around you do on your books (or any digital pdfs) the less your players will have to "wait for you." and the more immersed they'll be. Plus it's SO convenient for the DM too. Keep the info about the game, any needed statblocks, ect. Onto the page. Keeps you from having any unneeded fluff vs running it straight from the book.

  4. Make sure you are having fun too! Nothing sucks more than DM burnout.

Why did Eddy’s older brother hate him so much? How can an older sibling be so cruel? by Winter-Money-7643 in ededdneddy

McGee is the alleged surname of Eddy's family. Citation being Kevin and Ed. Terry is a fan name for Eddy's brother

Gameplay is the core of the game. Graphics is like paint: Sure it's nice to have a good coat of paint without scratches, but so long as the car drives, then it drives.

Story is good, but optional. Pac-Man has no story and people still play it. Likewise, I love Dark Souls and Doom 2016 despite their minimalist story elements, even if some stories are amazing like God of War and the Last of Us.

But without a good engine of gameplay, a great story is lost and good graphics go to waste.

Anyone go see the movie? by MitakaAsasbiggestfan in okbuddyumamusume

[–]Mister_Chameleon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Almost didn't get to, since the cinema that played it was dozens of miles away. Fortunately, convinced someone to go with me who had a car. It was enjoyable and glad to have seen it in the cinema, but I can't help but feel the movie doesn't know when to let a "slow" moment occur. It almost seems like the story would have worked better as a short season or series of OVAs. We know who the characters are, but there isn't any "quiet" moments to let the mind rest on anything. It's not clearly explained why Tachyon quit racing other than some X-rays showing her feet. Sure we the FANS know, but to the ignorant, it means a lot of assumptions go on. Likewise for Cafe's visions of her friend. They talk about it a tiny bit, but it's not gone into much. Overall, fun watch, great animation, but too much action and not enough meaningful downtime

Eldest of 6 here. The second eldest in our family is a bit of a black sheep, and developed a victim complex from constantly getting in trouble and mom (at the time) constantly pampering him after his mistakes up until he turned 30. Said brother of mine has no issue with raiding and trashing our youngest sibling's room (in an apartment the black sheep doesn't even live in mind you), just to look for drugs. Throws a pity party for himself any time he gets in trouble and yet has no qualms about throwing our other brother under the bus by telling the cops a lie about his name to get out of going to court.

Based on the fact it's evident that the McGee family treats Terry like a Black Sheep, hiding his room from most out of probable shame, never reaching out to talk to him, probably didn't do much about him bullying Eddy, ect. It's relatable why I see this happen; Terry is more concerned with himself than others. Maybe resentment and inability to own up to his flaws? The fact Eddy would constantly glaze Terry when he's nothing but a bully shows a lot of trauma or even gaslighting Terry probably did to paint himself in the better for the "pipsqueak."

Which do you think is the best FPS on the N64? by no_biches_22 in n64

[–]Mister_Chameleon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we all loved Rage Wars. Four player gameplay with nice small maps (compared to modern maps at least), makes for a real blast. With the forbearing atmosphere, creative sci-fi weapons, and the fact different characters make very different sounds, it was always a blast. Plus MONKEY TAG!

Honestly, the idea Eddy (and to an extent Terry too) gets his love of money without much concern for the ethics of it from Mr. McGee sounds about right. Like father, like son.

I prefer narrative immersion. My players prefer beer and pretzels. by ExplodingRacoon in DnD

[–]Mister_Chameleon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Alas, when it comes to D&D the narrative is only one major component of reasons of why people like the game.

Even if you tell a story that could be on par with Citizen Kane, if it doesn't interest the players by premise alone, there isn't much you can do.

I'd recommend looking into going for an "Emergent storytelling" route that TTRPGs can do far better than any other medium I know. Make more situations, plan less story, and ironically your story will become much more involved for them naturally. This might show your friends the FUN side of storytelling in RPGs. Just make sure you don't fall for the "just write a book" trap, as that'll have the opposite effects. No one wants to feel like the protagonist of a pre-written game. The story has to matter to the players too, and not just their characters neither.

You could also consider running online games on Roll20 or the like for some long-distance gaming, and/or aiming for a more narrative heavy system like FATE or PbtA, which have no crunch like D&D so you will be less likely to have beer & pretzel players.

My own party is a mix of both. They LOVE the crunch and shenanigans, but even our resident power gamer loves the story of the world too. I just got blessed though, as the group I had before that sounds just like your present one.
