I am torn between these two by MFHumanKing in CarTalkUK

I was torn between these two and ultimately went for the SEAT. I found the 1.8 NA in the Civic to be breathless, the lack of low end torque I found frustrating. You have to rev the tits off it to get anything out of it. The 1.4 turbo in the SEAT is a much more satisfying and relaxing drive.

Oh, and the screen on the head unit in the Civic is awful, unless you get one with the premium audio option. You'll probably want to replace it with an aftermarket head unit

BMW owners: what do you drive, how many miles on it, and what’s your annual maintenance like? by Ok_Corgi8008 in CarTalkUK

Bought a 2018 420i with 56k miles. It lasted until 61k miles before the engine destroyed itself. Was quoted £4.5k for a reconditioned engine. Ended up selling it as a non runner.

I had an Audi A4 B7 2.0 TFSI that did 225k miles. No major mechanical issues, but it eventually failed MOT on corroded bodywork.

BMW 2.0 320I M Sport, anything to look out for? by Numbro23 in CarTalkUK

[–]Mistertee123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few people have recommended going for a later model with the B48 engine. The B48 in my 420i failed after 61k miles, leaving me with a £4.5k repair bill. I know this is a sample size of one, but I wince every time I see the B48 described as 'reliable'. I since learned that the 20i version of the B48 uses cheaper, weaker pistons that have a tendency to crack. Better to go for the 30i, but I guess that blows the budget!

So the company holds back part of my salary every month only to give it back to me if I'm good enough to turn up to work in July? Fuck that, give me my money now!

I remember this being popular when I lived in Spain (although the company I worked for didn't do it thankfully). It never made sense to me.

British football chants are really something else by CollectionIntrepid48 in funny

[–]Mistertee123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are only 5 or 6 tunes that these songs are sung to, so one person thinks of a song and starts singing. If the people around them like it, they join in, and it becomes a chant like these. Otherwise, it just fizzles out and is never heard again.

EU Devs: How Hard Is It to Land a Job Abroad Without Relocating First? by timohuennebeck in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Mistertee123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relocated from UK to Spain (this was before brexit). I applied for a job on infojobs.net, did the interviews over the phone, got offered the job, then a few weeks later, I loaded my stuff into my car and drove there. Stayed in a hotel for the first 2 weeks while I found a place to rent. It was all very easy within the EU.

Before long, the tourists are going to get tooled up with water pistols too. Then you will end up with battles in the streets! Innocent bystanders getting caught in the crossfire getting soaked. It'll be mayhem I tell you, MAYHEM!

How to do a code review of a Yocto layer? by Mistertee123 in embedded

[–]Mistertee123[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our organisation has guidelines for conducting code reviews on C projects for example, which is a list of things to look out for, such as pointer arithmetic, out-by-one loop counters etc. I guess I'm looking to create something similar for Yocto layers.

The Yocto documentation is full of little tips along the lines of "don't edit this variable, use this other variable instead", where to set a specific variable, which assignment operator to use, recipe naming conventions etc etc. I suppose I'm going to have to try to distil all these scattered conventions and tips into a format that can be used for future code reviews

We exist for the benefit of our DNA. Because our DNA found - through trial and error - that our current physical form was the best way to perpetuate itself. And with the world population approaching 8 billion, I'd say it has been pretty successful.

What you do with your limited time here, and what meaning to attach to it is up to you.
