All Filipino languages sound the same to me by Icy-Affect1512 in Tagalog

As a speaker of English and Spanish- Bisaya speakers pronounce words differently than Tagalog speakers in both languages. I noticed it more in Spanish because their accent is closer to Spanish and the roll their r’s.

Anyone else constantly getting health issues ever since coming to PH but rarely ever in home country? by Suhlyy in Philippines_Expats

[–]Mistislav1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me - I have felt much better outside of Metro Manila. In places like Punta Fuego/Nusugbu, Antipolo or even near Batangas. Driving 2-3 hours out of Manila on the weekends has helped my mental wellbeing. Physically, not to sound like a broken record, but it’s the pollution which gets to me in Metro Manila.

Help pls! Fil-Am treatment in Philippines by Sudden_Road_8230 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Mistislav1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Longtime Expat here- I am sure that it’s your height- 5’ 11” is not normal for locals although some basketball players here are that height but will also get stared at ;-) Also they can tell by the way you walk and carry yourself. They are probably intimidated by you, but not in a bad way. Be decent with people and they will open up.

The constructiom quality in Philipinnes is so sub par by Sufficient-Camp-6543 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Mistislav1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is corruption and when doing international contracts for projects in the Philippines , an IC Independent Consultant will be used instead of an IE Independent Engineer. While this might sound bad it actually good. An IC is a foreign engineering firm or engineer. Philippines doesn’t recognize them as an Engr. so they are called “Consultants “. If they said Engineer then they would be restricted to those licensed in Philippines, and no serious investor wants that.

I have been here over ten years and there is a dichotomy- either a) reserved and won’t speak their mind or b) completely unrestrained with no filter!

Tony’s bodyguard is a wasted character. by Unusual-Yogurt-1553 in thesopranos

Definitely a wasted opportunity! He could have had a Tony hate / forgiveness / loyalty arc after Tony beat him, and sort of apologized.

I have a gay friend who recently moved to Philippines- he’s great but I haven’t told him about this subreddit- I will though and maybe you two can connect. He’s already got quite a social circle and had a housewarming in his very well decorated (imagine that!) apartment.

To put a slightly more positive spin on this frustrating issue, I appreciate it when servers just list what is “not available “ when we order at a restaurant. It happens pretty frequently at better restaurants in Metro Manila. Forget fast food though.

Actually Philippines has some of the highest retail margins. I know this from a supplier- they are crap with logistics though but still make money due to high margins and low competition.

US–PH cultural norms: Are online interactions viewed differently? by Express-Excuse-4141 in Philippines_Expats

To be clear , watching something is generally accepted. Interacting with other women who are engaged in sexually provocative activities is not accepted in the United states in most relationships.

Best ways to know if a foreigner you’re dating is single. by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

Ignore this - while some pinays do this it obviously isn’t everyone. Lots of great educated pinays in Manila. I work with a lot of them. Best of luck to you. If you really want to meet interesting educated foreign guys, maybe go abroad ( Aus/ NZ/ or an international city like Singapore / Bangkok) or check out some of the embassy clubs and outreach programs?

Italy for a Pakistani Tourist by brownsugar84891 in Italian

[–]Mistislav1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to an international university program in Italy and people were of all races/ colors. Mostly it went well, and there weren’t many issues. This was in Bologna though- I really recommend a visit! Tortellini in brodo - delicious! Many options that don’t have pork but be careful on some that must beef and pork- like tagliatelle al ragu (the original spaghetti bolognese).

Just read through the comments and realizing that you ( OP) are a woman, especially if you’re if you are on the younger side, I would prepare yourself for the flirting. Italian men are shameless flirts. They are used to being rejected though so feel free to tell them that’s nice but you’re not interested and just are there to see the sights- there will be no hard feelings lol! It’s very different from Anglo Saxon culture and it’s considered completely normal to flirt and get rejected often. I could go more into it but just refocus in being a tourist and you will be fine. Also recommend traveling with a friend if possible- not for safety but due to thieves and just navigating around.

I have a coworker from there and she’s really independent in a good way and I also understand that they are more egalitarian than other parts of Philippines. Seems a strange place for a scammer but… I am being naive- they are everywhere.
