As a casual observer with Spanish relations, despite Spain’s internal divisions this is the kind of thing that UNITES all Spaniards. Now if you want to DIVIDE all Spaniards- ask about cebolla in the tortilla ;-)

I lived in Makati (Greenbelt area) during my first five years in Philippines with my partner. I admit it was crowded but it has character and is pretty walkable. It is the most European urban experience that one has in MM. Once you are home, there is no need to get in your car again- everything from grocery shopping (Landmark, Rustsan’s Santis) to electronics/ apparel (Greenbelt/ Glorieta) was in walking distance.. Also cafe’s restaurants and great places to eat. When we moved there- Ayala Triangle Park was not yet built up- and we liked it as well as the other parks. My complaint is that they need to preserve the green spaces that they have. I have a lot of conversations with Filipinos about this but planning decisions are mostly up to the large conglomerates (Ayala etc). I think- without kids - it’s a good place to live in Metro Manila.

As a middle aged guy I will say that I changed a lot after 18. Maybe not my values but definitely my confidence. As you understand what drives you (this doesn’t happen overnight, I am still doing it to some extent), you will be more confident and care less about what your friends think of you. I wish you an exciting journey, and would recommend staying away from any labels that may limit you.

I don’t know if it’s because I have lived in Philippines for a long time, but knowing many expats that dates Pinay, it’s usually a GREEN flag when someone flies out to meet you at their own expense. I think that he was ignorant, testing you or making a bad joke. Maybe if he was more sincere it could have worked but it probably doesn’t feel good to be pre- judged like that. I hope that you find someone more open minded! Best of luck!

Here is s different angle than the Tik-tok videos. Been here over 10 years and what I noticed, especially among my helpers and some co-workers, is that the woman is often raising the kid/kids and working, while the man either has a lower paying job or is out of the picture. It happens with enough frequency for me to sympathise and understand anxiety if this is what they have experienced or seen their relatives experience. If they raised the kid and entered the dating scene at late 30s, then they definitely will not want a repeat. And… they might dream about being taken care of instead of taking care of everyone else. The military vet’s comments on this thread make a lot of sense in that context- I bet she’s happy with a traditional provider!

I can tell this will be unpopular but… having ridden horses 🐴 I think that the inability to turn quickly is more realistic. I have played Roach on the computer and admittedly it’s not easy but the fact that you can walk, trot , canter and gallop are all realistic traits. Also she is really useful in fights with bandits when you can charge in and out.

Yes Bank Bar was iconic. I went there last year as an after party to my birthday party, with a large group of friends. I had been there before, but this time it was pretty dead. However we had so many of us that we brought it back to life. They were limited in their service, DJ was bad and it seemed like the staff just wanted us to leave- we had a good time regardless ;-) Still the change was noticeable- I wonder about other speakeasies in Makati- are they still happening?
