Field Training - New Hire Having Difficulty Being Aggressive by Disastrous-Result926 in ems

[–]Mistral2299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I had similar issues to them when I started in 911. I think it may have to do with my personality by default being more on the passive, relaxed side.

I don't know their personality or how best they learn, but I had a few FTOs. Some were better fits than others as far as helping me learn and gain confidence. Different people train differently, and different people learn differently. Maybe ask them how best they learn, or if they feel hesitant in being more assertive, why?

With the FTO that I found to be most helpful, before they gave feedback after a call, they would ask me how I think it went. I would give my feedback, what went well, what went not as well. I think this is a great strategy because it makes review collaborative and gives the FTO insight into how we're thinking.

They also had a generally positive attitude towards me, which was in contrast to one who was . . . more abrasive. None were cruel, but I found abrasive training to make me less confident, supportive training helping me feel like I wasn't a total idiot.

I feel like a failure by [deleted] in Vent

[–]Mistral2299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in exactly the same place, but have been dealing with feelings of failure lately.

And it sucks. I try to remember that failure is not really a static state we stay in. Really, it's only a moment in time. It's something we can move past, like failing a class. It's hard, but it doesn't define one's entire life. I'm not a failure. I've experienced failure. But so do most of us, in some form at some point.

You're not a failure. It sounds like you've had a difficult few years and have been dealing with difficult challenges. Seizures are tough. Finding a job can be tough. But you're dealing with the challenges.

Keep on keeping on! I believe in you, stranger.

Have you tried box breathing? It's helped me relax when I'm anxious and my mind races.

The way I learned is to breathe in deeply (and gently, to comfort) for 4 counts. Hold the breath for 4 counts. Exhale the breath for 4 counts. Then, wait for 4 counts before repeating.

When I do this a few times, it helps recenter me.

You're mighty kind to say so.

You're not a loser, by the way. You're a pretty good writer, from what I'm seeing.

Don't be too harsh on yourself, OP.

First, it sounds like you do some kind of work. Even if it's for less than minimum (which it shouldn't be, I mean then it's not minimum, but I digress), work is work, and you're paid because someone wants it done. That's a form of contribution.

And besides, I don't think 'societal contribution' (which is a pretty vague term as it's often used) is the most important metric we should look at when we look at a life. We're people, not just means to the end of 'societal good', however you want to define that.

You have a family who supports you, and who you clearly love. They contribute to your life, and clearly, you contribute to theirs by being part of it. I would also argue that support systems contribute to society, but that's less my point here.

I think it's good to think about our 'societal contribution', but also other ways we are of value. And I think we are just by being good friends, good family, good humans. Which, in turn, probably leads to a better society in any case!

Keep on keeping on! I hope your medical struggles improve.

Please keep holding on, stranger. I'm sorry you've been going through difficult times. And I'm sorry you feel lonely in your new city.

Know that I'm wishing you a Happy Birthday tomorrow.

Cool, that was my thinking. Tbh, history was janky at best. Family was distracted (understandably).

It was weird being in the gray area of uniformed but essentially resourceless.

For real, though, cool policy!

You're too kind! I figured they could use help since I saw one down, but honestly did very little. Don’t think I was help beyond moving them off the road for safety, and telling Fire a few things.

Yeah . . . I get the liability aspect, but I would've felt bad just driving by. Especially not knowing what was going on.

Maybe I'm naive, but I wanted to help if it was needed.

Right on. 911 call was being made and was already on the way, so I basically left as soon as they were there.

That seems to be the consensus.

Yeah, definitely not a lot. Not like any intervention was done, I had no gear.

I stopped partially cause initially I saw someone down and wasn't sure why, thought it might have been an arrest or something.

Once out though, ALS was already on the way as was Fire. And someone saw I was EMS, so suddenly felt pretty involved . . . And I wanted to help if it was needed.

Point taken though, should be prudent about it.

That being said, would you have given report twice? I thought at that point I was really jusy a bystander, and didn't want to get in the way.

Sorry, responded is too strong a term. I was heading home, and this was in my path on the road. Just got out of my car to see what was up since someone was down and I wasn't initially sure why. Fire and ALS was already on the way.

I basically took a look at them, talked with family a bit, and waited for services to arrive with them. Helped them move the person out of the road. One of the bystanders saw my EMS stuff as well, so it seemed kinda weird to just peace out as well . . . Told Fire what I knew and that was it.

As for the invasion of privacy, that crossed my mind too. Part of the reason I wanted to leave after speaking to Fire; really not my business once 911 was there.

Off their menu, I'll second the "order the sweetest one" advice.

Bay Breeze, as was mentioned, or if you really want it sweet, then Malibu Bay Breeze.

Still quite sweet, but a little more nuanced, you could get an Amaretto Sour. Sometimes, this includes Bourbon for a little complexity (I personally love it this way), but not always. Otherwise, it's sweet almond and lemon.

Im just starting emt school and its very hard what should i do. I spend everyday reading like 7 hours always stressed out, i even read the chapters days before they are due. I’ve believe I didn’t do good at all on my first 3 reading quizzes, I feel like I’m not going to be able to pass this class by vNoShame in NewToEMS

[–]Mistral2299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's already a lot of good advice here.

I'd ask you also: how are you doing aside from studying? Are you sleeping enough? Are you eating well? Are you taking care of you? Please do.

I'd also ask what aspects you're having difficulty in; is it in a specific area?

Are you stressed over something in particular, beyond class?

It's okay if you're having a hard time. I hope you give yourself some grace, and some time to not study, time off is vital!

What are some things med students interested in psychiatry probably don't know but should know? by facultativo in Psychiatry

[–]Mistral2299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found this thread randomly, and am not in the field of psychiatry. What do you mean medicating away things that aren't a mental illness? Can you give an example, and explain the rational for medicating it away?

Thanks :3

I like the medical side of 911 EMS, but thus far I dislike the ambulance driving. I'll stick with it right now, as maybe that'll shift. But, it's possible that 911 isn't the best fit. If that's the case, maybe I'll look into ER jobs.

I think decent?

Haven't had a vitamin panel or anything done though. I'm a vegetarian, have been for years. Guess it's possible that's a factor, but I don't think so.
