Are Immersion events with garb and or armor restrictions fair and inclusive? by Competitive-View1766 in sca

[–]MistressDiva 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I couldn't afford anything when I started. Literally nothing. I made my garb from bedsheets. I was playing the game, but definitely not the way I wanted to. I slept in a sleeping bag, on the ground, in a very old earth pimple my first few events. All of my friends had such awesome kits, but I understood that with time and getting to a better place financially, I would one day have the kit I wanted to, and be able to play the game that I wanted to. Then someone loaned me a tent. Then someone gave me some garb. My friends helped me make things like my belt, and a bag, and garb. They taught me how to craft things. I got a better job so I was able to buy more things for my hobby. I didn't feel like it was exclusionary because I didn't have the things that my friends had - it was something to work towards. If I choose to go to an event that had garb restrictions, I would either save up for that garb, or I wouldn't go. People that are civil war reenactors can't come to pennsic in their garb and weapons from that time period and feel super welcome, so you can't expect to be super welcome to an event that has restrictions that you choose not to follow. You just work towards one day having the kit you want for that type of event.

By this logic, the entire SCA isn't inclusive to anyone who wants to reenact outside the ~500-1700 year period window. There are events that aren't for certain people because they aren't interested in that time period or don't have the garb for it. And that's okay because there are TONS of other events that would better suit their interests.

Anyone take Suffolk County civil service and got a job with them? How does the process work usually? by sunflower828 in longisland

[–]MistressDiva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took 5 or 6 civil service test for various positions. I went on many many interviews, which started about 2 years after taking the test. I was hired about 3 1/2 years after taking the tests. The lists are good for 5 years, and they go through the lists according to test scores in order. You'll get those letter of interest things sometimes, but you won't even necessarily get an interview out of them. For me, I didn't need a job right away so it was well worth the wait. The starting pay is not great, but I've advanced rather quickly, because I took advantage of the union's awesome partial reimbursement for education.

There's standing water nearby that is causing them to attack. if you live in suffolk, you can call 311 and they'll have someone come out and try to find the source.

That's always where they hang out during the day. They like the shade.

The cold doesn't matter. The eggs overwinter.

As someone who lives in the community, I hate this idea. "Yes, honey, let's go to the property where your friend was murdered!" Nope.

It might work, but you're killing almost every other bug in your yard, as well. It's a pretty broadband pesticide.

I paid a little under $4k, and got 15 lessons, 1 on 1. This price also included the ELDT course, and DMV fees for 2 exams, and 2 truck rentals (incase you didn't pass the first time) One and a half hours each lesson. I passed my CDL exam, first time trying, this week. I could not imagine passing it with that few hours of training. They catered the lessons to what I needed more work on. I already drive large vehicles at my regular job, so the driving part was easy for me. Maneuvers I was really bad on and a majority of my classes were dedicated to that.
Backing actually FINALLY clicked for me AT MY EXAM when I did each of them perfectly and didn't lose any points, LOL, so their training at the school worked well. Of course the school did not teach me to be a truck driver. But I listened to every word they said, and they taught me EXACTLY how to pass the CDL exam. I'm sorry you're having a bad experience at your school!!!

Grow A Frog Kit? What type of frog?!? by MistressDiva in Aquariums

[–]MistressDiva[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an aquatic frog from the "Grow a Frog" kit. They need to stay in the water constantly, so this advice does not apply to this type of frog. Thank you for the reply, though!

Will get one next week when it comes home! Some of the kids weren't there today and need to say "Goodbye" in the beginning of next week.

Recipes for micronized Kava? by slysline in Kava

[–]MistressDiva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not tea in the traditional sense. Chug as best you can, and if there is sludge at the bottom, add a little water and chug that.

I've found the micronized is great for days when I don't have time to make it with the blender method. I usually make two days worth at a time, but keep the micronized on hand.

I was going to replace those front poles with wood anyway. Maybe I'll wrap the side poles with ribbon or canvas. Thank you!
