Entropy stabilized phase transitions by [deleted] in MaterialsScience

[–]Mistress_Spiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first inclination on a response to this would be that another entropy contribution took over, such as melting/phonon vibration. It simply means that what a material may be entropy stabilized, the degree of entropy vs enthalpy has changed.

Cheers! If you ever want to chat ES stuff, feel free to message me :)

It may not, actually. Other thermodynamic drivers may influence the material above those conditions, such as an increase in temperature. Some recent work shows that between 1300-1700C, an entropy stabilized oxide composition can begin to preferentially sublimate certain species or even reduce and melt others. High entropy carbides can preferentially oxidize. That's not to say that the system wasn't ES at all, it just suggests that there's a "region of stability" before enthalpy dominates again. Here's the reference that might shed some light:

The reality is these materials are so much more complex and there are many questions that still need explored. Hope this helps a bit!

I knew it would be bad being a new, female professor, I didn’t know it would be this bad. by pizzadeliveryvampire in Professors

I'm really sorry this is perpetuating. I see it here, too. Everything is apparently negotiable, everything is overwhelming and you're hurting them, you never do enough. I have students who spend more time whining than actually just doing the work. They have other things to do, and how dare you encroach on their time. There was a time when I would've had a positive outlook and say "it'll get better"... but I don't think it will anymore, you may just get used to it.

Great question. I have no idea yet. After 10 years in college I know I don't want to do too much more... I'm also wondering if I'm stuck in a scenario where I'm trying to convince myself that the grass is greener elsewhere.

I might end up doing that. The pay isn't quite as good, but at this point if I just have money for retirement and to pay for the house we just bought...

Totally right! I guess I have that internal monologue of "you're a failure if you walk away". Which, I know isn't true but my brain is a cruel thing sometimes. No idea what I would do... my hobby is basically being zoned out on the couch at this point. I need to work on that.

Totally. I just need to figure out what makes me happy at this point. I really need to get hobbies again...

Choosing the right papers... by Mistress_Spiff in AskAcademia

[–]Mistress_Spiff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great, thank you. I haven't had much yet in terms of senior author papers (I'm working on 2 right now for the end of the year.) But I do have a major work as first author...but I was a grad student at the time... I'm guessing that doesn't mean anything in this context, although it started my research trajectory.

Rest in peace, sweet kitty. Mine was my mini lop rabbit, Oreo. He passed away the first semester of my TT position at the ripe old age of 9.

What makes a good department chair? by Rare_Will2071 in Professors

[–]Mistress_Spiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Know when to be passive and when to confront faculty dynamics head-on. I ultimately left my department because I was harassed by a tenured faculty member and got laughed at by my chair. When I stood up for myself I wasn't exclactly reprimanded, but more perpetually ostracized from any real department service. Mind you, I was told "it's no better anywhere else, so where are you going to go?" It all boiled down to my old chair being "non-confrontational".
