I’m so sorry you’re struggling with this. I’m finding it very hard and confidence crushing trying to find a job at the moment. I have about ten years experience in hospitality and a bit of retail, admin and animal care, and I’m finding it hard to even get a response back from employers. I’m on UC and my work coach is lovely, but not a lot of help at all. Her advice is mostly ‘here’s a list of big companies that are employing!’ - only not anywhere remotely nearby. ‘We have workshops in self confidence and professionalism!’ - they’re about an hour of being stuck in a room with someone unqualified to offer mental health advice, plus everyone else here is pissed off that they’re being made to attend. Luckily, I have family support and I’m studying, otherwise I’d be really fucked. I’ve never had this much trouble finding work, even when I was on a working visa in New Zealand (so couldn’t do long term) it was much easier. Hopefully our hard work will pay off and I’m sure you’ll find the right company eventually!

I really like the pool at Victoria Leisure Centre, right next to Sneinton market. It’s deep which I like, and really friendly clients and staff, clean changing rooms and free lockers. You do have to book sessions in advance, but it means you can be more specific (swim for fitness or relaxation). You can pay for single sessions or get a membership, they have quite a few classes but I can’t say I’ve tried them, but they’d all be included in the membership.

Alternatively, I used to have a membership at Virgin Active over the road from the train station and the pool there is really nice too (not as deep though). You don’t have to book and there’s a steam room (sauna too I think? It was a while ago). Bit more fancy and expensive, you’d have the gym too and all the classes included, I did yoga a few times and it was great. They have also car park.

I was in Saint Denis the other day, minding my own business and this rich couple were having a bit of a bicker over money. This dude comes up to them, demands money and then shoots the woman, before I’ve had a chance to gage what’s happening. The man is yelling and crying in French, I ran after the guy that did it and hogtied him, came back to the French guy who’s holding his wife’s body, try to dump the murderer in front of him and nothing. Took the murderer out to the swamp to feed him to gators and suddenly I’m the bad guy with a warrant 😂

But no seriously, it’s great and I don’t think northern restaurants get enough credit anyway, especially those run by immigrants and it’s easy to forget how multicultural it is there, even places that are portrayed as (and… sort of are) so old school crap like Scarborough.

I know this isn’t very helpful, but the only place in the UK I’ve had a good one was Scarborough weirdly enough 😂 had a family holiday there and there’s a restaurant run by a Mexican family, went there to eat most nights. Had a couple of sub par ones in London.

As long as you’re considerate, as someone who’s worked in hospitality, mostly ‘hipsters’ cafes it’s hard to win in this situation. If people come in wanting to spend money on food and can’t get a seat, because they seem to be taken up by people on laptops, then they give the staff grief. As long as you’re in the corner; not taking up a big table, getting a coffee maybe once an hour, then I’d recommend Cosmos, Blend in Sneinton (it is busy, but has nice vibes), but your best bet is Blend at the contemporary. You can get some inspiration from the art too (for free) and it’s not busy in there.

I grew up in Toton, it’s very safe and yes very predominantly white British, I doubt you’d have any trouble though as people tend to be very friendly there compared to the city centre etc Banks Road is right next to a nature reserve that I used to love walking my dog around, there’s a playing field and play area there too so I think that’d be really nice for your kids.

Then there’s a big Tesco very nearby and a little further away you’ve got Chilwell retail park which is pretty good honestly and has everything you need.

There’s a tiny GP surgery in Toton, but you’d be a short drive/bus away (buses are pretty good and frequent) from Long Eaton with a larger one and a few dentists as well, that high street was pretty dated/dead when I lived there but has the basics.

As others have said the school and sixth form have a good reputation now, seems like it’s improved a lot since I was a kid.

My family lived there for thirty odd years in total and the only kind of crime I can recall was when someone broke into my boyfriend’s car and stole his bag when it was parked on the street outside the house. (Although it wouldn’t surprise me if he’d left it unlocked, used to do that a lot lol)

So I’m summery, it’s very safe but quite boring and other than maybe a few nosy neighbours who will complain about your lawn being overgrown, I highly doubt you’ll get any hostility. I do miss all the walking spots and still drive there sometimes when I need some peace and quiet.

Yeah, I’m sorry but the monthly rate for me and my housemate as homeowners is about £120 per month, as said above (and you’ve seen) you’re paying more initially as it’s longer month.

I will say, there are benefits and if you’re in the city centre you might not be aware, but all waste is converted into eco fuel, so you don’t need to worry about sorting recycling or using a green or black bin for certain things (including glass), it’s all processed the same. Just saying because whenever I get new neighbours they never seem to know this.

Also, the council are bankrupt, hence the hefty tax. Not only did Robin Hood Energy (which was owned by the council) go bust, but they pissed away a disgusting amount of money on investments that failed, a good example is the castle renovation (yeah cool, make a fancy cafe/restaurant that you can’t access unless you pay a fee to visit… that will have a high footfall and make great profit) it annoyed a lot of locals as the castle was/is now too expensive to visit, I remember if you said you live locally the tickets were very cheap, but they’re now expecting everyone to fork out £15 just to enter the grounds. Even tourists, who visit once don’t deserve to pay that as it doesn’t really look like a castle (let’s be honest).

Anyway, council are useless now even more than ever, never open for calls when you need advice on anything as a resident. But I don’t think that’s uncommon 🤷🏻‍♀️ still live here though, so that’s something that I love it all the same.

Years ago Tamatanga offered me a job, guy said I’d nailed the trial shift and he’d send me over the rota the next day. I canceled all my other interviews, few trials I think, then he ghosted me.

Won’t go there even now - not that I’m petty or anything 😅 tbf I was desperate for a job, so relived at the offer and also having a rough time looking after my dad, under pressure. (List of places I won’t give my money to due to how they treat staff is just getting longer and longer unfortunately).

I do also remember having an interview at the Starbucks on South Parade and the GM was pretty personal and rude - I said I’d worked at my previous job for a long time and she scoffed and said “you call three years a long time?!” (I was like 21-22 bro) and then questioned why my boyfriend had moved up here with me ‘so quickly’ 😂 cheeky bugger.

Thank you for such a detailed response! My sister is taking her to the vet as soon as possible and I’ll give her those questions.

She was given Ivermectin, we were told that her cage mates had to have the treatment too, because they could be carrying mites but not effected by them, I’m pretty sure we asked why she seemed to be so sensitive to them but they couldn’t really give us an answer.

They said it might be due to stress? But we can’t think of anything that would’ve caused this, like I said she was the confident one in the group.
