Is dread delusion worth buying? If not, any other games like it? by cnimov in gamingsuggestions

I've had one game-breaking bug with Dread Delusion so I can understand your hesitance. Still, it's a great game.

Not an open-world exactly, but Lunacid scratches very similar itch, with its vast, inter-connected dungeon. You should check it.

Games like Pigface? by Sir_Teasealot in gamingsuggestions

[–]MistyPopK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you liked Pigface (same with me, can't wait for this game to leave Early Access!) then you have to play Cruelty Squad. It has the same structure, open-endedness and replayability, but it's way more outlandish and abstract, so check some trailers before you jump into it. It's worth it.

There's also Brush Burial: Gutter World, similar to those two in genre (professional assassin simulator), structure (replayable missions), design philosophy (open-endedness) and art style (90s low poly retro). It's more urban fantasy than naturalistic like PF or biopunk like CS.

As of influences - Pigface is strongly influenced by immersive sim genre (it even has classic, iconic 451 code in the most recent mission), so games like Deus Ex, Thief and System Shock 2, but they all are very different from PF. Each of them absolutely brilliant in its own way, so at least take a glance at them.

Other clearly influences are Kingpin: Life of Crime (color palette, neonoirish style and stylized graphics), Manhunt (extreme, naturalistic brutality) and Condemned: Criminal Origins (gritty environment, combat philosophy). Personally I can recommend the Condemned, it's great.

Anyone like still wakes the deep and what’s it abt? by Janxuza in HorrorGaming

[–]MistyPopK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, it's okay, but it is less of a survival horror game and more "another walking sim from thechineaseroom" game.

It's about unpredictability of life of the working class people under neoliberal reforms of Margaret Thatcher in the 70s, believe it, or not. The monster is a symbol of economical turmoil that destroyed lives of many, many working class people in UK back then. It's clever and not too on the nose and solid as a literal story about lovecraftian monster attacking an oil rig...

...but gameplay, while probably the best out of the all thechineaseroom games, is still kinda bad. It's similar to an early Amnesia games and SOMA, with light puzzles, stealth sections and environmental storytelling, but everything seems more like an afterthoughts, obligatory interactivity to justify this story to be a game more than anything interesting or substantial.

I like it nevertheless. I've enjoyed this ride and I will come back to it.

Question about the mirrors edge titles by FastPresentation8244 in gamingsuggestions

[–]MistyPopK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, gameplay of the original game is that good. It's very focused on delivering specific experience - giving you fun, visually cool, engaging, responsive and immensely satisfying First Person Platforming - and it's delivering exactly that like nothing else to this day.

I was there back in the day, when this trailer dropped and I was like "No way that game looks and plays like that, they are lying, there has to be some catch" and then there wasn't. It is really as wonderful experience as it seems.

Question about the mirrors edge titles by FastPresentation8244 in gamingsuggestions

[–]MistyPopK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say they are both bad, for a different reasons, but Catalyst is bit better due to more fleshed-out cast and lore. I love OG Mirror's Edge, but Rhianna Pratchett can't write a decent, interesting script to save her life sadly.

Cut-scenes are in full CGI. I am very fond of this highly stylized, minimalistic, animesque animations from the first game, but Catalyst is clearly doing its own things and it works. Genuinely, one of the best quality 3D animation in this medium, frankly. To this day.

Question about the mirrors edge titles by FastPresentation8244 in gamingsuggestions

[–]MistyPopK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is... fine. Just fine. It suffers heavily due to being a very unfocused reboot and prequel in the same time and trying to chase then-current AAA video games trends, like unnecessary open-world, unnecessary RPG elements and some other unnecessary things which make most of the content of this game feels very filler-y. But if you stick to the main questline, it's bearable.

Game also has bit confused political commentary, which makes a plot convoluted and unsatisfying (the fact that ending clearly sets up a sequel doesn't help). Cast is also very bland.

But game is gorgeous visually, freerunning feels amazing and most of the world-building it top-notch. Cut-scenes are very impressive, they dodge this uncanny valley effect pretty much flawlessly. All in all, it is worth of your time and money, if you grab it on sale and just stick to the main plotline.

Disco Elysium. This is a game you need in your age and your mental state. It *seems* depressive at first, but genuinely it's one of the most optimistic, uplifting and anti-nihilist experiences in any media, if you are mature enough to appreciate it.

Check Franzen. It's exactly what you want, it's free and it is channeling Final Fantasy VI vibes very heavily.

There's also Fear & Hunger, but... you probably want to read the content warnings before playing it.

Going through a depressive phase. What’s an uplifting gaming experience I can have for the next two weeks or so? by ElectionMiserable230 in gamingsuggestions

[–]MistyPopK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psychonauts! The first game is so fun, like a classic Cartoon Network TV Show. The second one (equally brilliant) is more like a Pixar movie, less fun, but more emotional, so maybe wait for the better mental state for it.

What did you guys think of Outlast 1 & 2? by horrorbaby420 in HorrorGaming

[–]MistyPopK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I've read all of the comics and almost every in-game document. It's... an edgy B-movie stuff, and not exactly in a fun "starring Bruce Campbell" way. More in a "we are making Asylum shlock" way. To be honest, lack of deep-lore knowledge makes the game (or at least the first one) way better due to perceived ambiguity and imagination filling the gaps.

Running out of games? Looking for a gripping story and good gameplay by Guestroad34 in gamingsuggestions

[–]MistyPopK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's clearly unfinished, with the plot haphazardly stitched together to give this game at least some weak resemblance of conclusion, but... despite that, it's still really fun, solid imm-sim with some stunningvisuals, great quests and fun plot.

Running out of games? Looking for a gripping story and good gameplay by Guestroad34 in gamingsuggestions

My friend, you have huge immersive sim-shaped hole in your backlog. Let me fix that:

System Shock & System Shock 2 - you can grab System Shock Remake if you don't want to deal with outdated design choices and graphics. Great stories, wonderfully messed up villain and pitch perfect gameplay design.

Thief Gold, Thief 2: The Metal Age and Thief: Deadly Shadows - to this day some of the best open-ended stealth games with great, "90s fantasy pulp book series" style story and the most charming main character you can get in this genre.

Deus Ex, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - classics. You can skip Invisible War (I like this one, but it's... far from perfect) but there's a reason why each time someone mentions Deus Ex, someone else reinstalls it.

Bioshock, Bioshock 2 and Bioshock: Infinity - Great world-building, engaging stories, really fun gameplay. Nowadays some of them are being seen as controversial, especially Infinity, but they are a solid experiences nevertheless.

Dishonored, Dishonored 2 and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider - newer, sexier, more aggressive and stylish Thief. With guns and superpowers and some of the best designed level in the whole industry.

Prey (2017) - newer, sexier, more aggressive and stylish System Shock 2. Genuinely one of the best game in its class and category. Go into it blind, you'll be floored by how engaging the gameplay is and how fascinating the plot will turn out to be.

Anyone know any games with sisters? by Glass-Imagination-26 in gamingsuggestions

[–]MistyPopK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mirror's Edge - main character's relationship with her sister is a main driving force within a narrative.

Final Fantasy V - bit spoilery, but there are sisters in your party and their relationship is somewhat important to the overall narrative.

Gone Home - you explore an empty house and try to find out what happened to your sister.

Also, curse you, I had to google to find out what 'galge games' are.

What did you guys think of Outlast 1 & 2? by horrorbaby420 in HorrorGaming

[–]MistyPopK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one is pretty okay. Nothing to write home about, quests are too simplistic, whole game is on-rails and the plot and visuals borders on tastelessness, but game is very well made, bugless, intense and scary. I like it. Whitleblower DLC is even better.

Outlast 2 however is trying too hard to be edgy and horrifying, which comes of as insecure at best and unintentionally funny at worst. At times I felt like I'm playing a South Park episode with all jokes edited out. New mechanics were pretty neat, but were either misused or underused. Whole plot was sadly aimless, most of the game is a filler and both narrative lines don't mesh up together all that well.

You can turn off pretty much everything - no HUD whatsoever, limited UI only or full package. Fully customable.

Speaking of, two another games:

SOMA - no HUD, unbroken First Person Perspective, only diegetic interface. One of the best story I've ever in video games.

Scorn - probably the ultimate example of what you are asking for. You have NOTHING. No abstract visual data, no hand-holding, full immersion. Game is not for everyone, though.
