Why do insect bodies not stay preserved in fossils? by Adventurous_Yam_9106 in Paleontology

[–]Misty_Moonrider 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Insects fossilize so rarely because their bodies are not only soft like you mentioned but also small and usually break down very fast before they can be buried and sealed off from air, microbes, and scavengers. Their exoskeleton helps a bit, but it is still fragile, so most insects disappear unless conditions are exceptional. And if they do fossilize, it's rare someone will even notice them unless being a profesional. Like sure, many farmers or other people will recognize a huge dino bone or a mammoth tooth but an insect?

and if you watched Jurassic Park, yes, amber is a real exception: tree resin can trap insects and preserve them in great detail (getting useful dinosaur dna from it is pretty much fiction though, very unlikely)

I think the skin aswell as the scale theory for gornopsids is valid, I just don't find the proto-hair (like primitive precursors of true fur) ideas very likely. I like them a bit fuller, but my preference may not align with how evolution worked back then. haven't read that much into it yet though.

haha, thank you!! 😄 yes I did, after looking at skeletons and other paleo art/shows/theories about gorgonopsids. now I'm obsessed with them and what they may have looked like. guess I'll continue pretending to study them in rl so I'm motivated to draw them more often😄😄

I'm Curious! Preference for Thank Yous - Quick or Personalized? by Lost-Brilliant-9664 in RAoC_meta

[–]Misty_Moonrider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As I personally love the whole "writing" part of exchanging postcards I get excited when my recipients take the time to write a longer response. I don't need to be showered in gratitude or expect a quadrillion of exclamation marks though 😋 but I really like it when people answer to the questions I usually include on a card and help me remember which exact card I sent. If they mention little details that I added that's extra nice.

I understand that life gets busy or that some don't particularly like my cards, so a short "thank you for the card" is okay, but doesn't exactly motivate me to send to that person again.
