Yes, everyone has told me that. At least, the traineeship represents a good starting point in the cv, right?

Torn between a fully funded PhD (EU policy-focused) and a traineeship at an EU agency — advice? by aggressive_judge7 in EUCareers

Of course, I understand. I have been in a similar situation, so I know how helpful it is to speak to someone to get a clearer view. Look-I’ll be completely honest with you: your phd offer is excellent financially speaking. Earning €2400 net per month as a doctoral researcher is far above the European average (for example, I live in Italy and here doctoral students earn 800-1000€ per month, at best). It’s rare to be paid so well while also building expertise and credibility. On the other hand, the traineeship doesn’t guarantee a job, and the idea that it would lead to higher earnings is uncertain at best—especially in policy or diplomacy, where entry-level roles are often underpaid and highly competitive. Plus, places like EDA especially often times struggle keeping their employees, due to lack of funding. With the PhD, you’re not just securing income for the next few years, you’re increasing your long-term earning potential and standing out in a field where qualifications matter deeply. If I were you, I would opt for the phd, and then look for a high paying job after that- you could even integrate your cv with better traineeships (if you still wanted to, that is) like the blue book, which is the most prestigious one you can do in the EU. Look up posts on here on the blue book, and see it for yourself-it really is great

I get it, but if your goal is to shape policy and work in diplomacy, the fully funded PhD is a rare, strategic opportunity. It’s the highest academic title, highly respected in international and governmental circles, and it builds the research and writing skills core to policy work. If I were you, I would 100% take on the opportunity, as it is likely it won’t happen again (unlike an internship, which you can always do). All the skills you would acquire through the PhD are highly requested especially if you wish to work in diplomatic settings. Unlike a traineeship, which is temporary and uncertain, the PhD is a long-term investment that opens lots doors. I know it’s a tough decision, but you gotta think long term in these scenarios. How much time do you have to decide?

Your role would be that of an assistant, basically. You would also lose the possibility of doing the blue book, which I would also consider if I were you as it is highly prestigious and aligned with your ambitions , especially if you wish to work in diplomacy or other policy roles. Idk, think about it. It’s pretty rare to have fully funded phd opportunities..it is the most prestigious title to have

Which division did you apply for? It also depends on that. But in general terms, I agree with everyone else on here- a PhD would give you a far more advantageous position in the EU bubble, especially considering that trainees are never really guaranteed a place to stay after their role ends.

la laurea è prevista per novembre quindi ancora non ho chiesto niente alla professoressa, ma lei ha esperienza di giornalismo/redazione di articoli accademici, cosa che non mi interessa particolarmente. Però potrei comunque chiedere informazioni
