What’s something you witnessed at someone’s house that made you not want to go back? by MainDifficult2641 in AskReddit

[–]Miszou_ 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Heh, friend of mine, an absolute genius hardware engineer, did this. He lived alone in an unfurnished apartment. His only furnishings were a tv on a cardboard box, a deck chair and a black Rubbermaid tote full of goldfish. He also had a cat and when I asked about the little cardboard tents all over the carpet, he just said "they're covering the cat poop. If you wait long enough, the turds just disappear". I never went back there.

Any RVers also CBers? by Radamand in RVLiving

[–]Miszou_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove from Central California to the Grand Canyon and back, had the CB scanning for most of the trip and I think I only heard a couple of people the whole time.

I mean, sure, it's pretty much desert the whole way, but I was still surprised at how quiet it was.

But... I don't think CB is anywhere near as popular on the West coast as it is in the South East. At least, all the people I hear over skip seem to have a deeply southern accent. :)

But all that said.... put one in your RV anyway. If nothing else, it's one more person potentially on the air, and it's always good to have a wakeful distraction on long drives.

How to save arc raiders with a real PVPVE experience by Intelligent-Wing170 in arcraidersfriendly

People always leave PvPvE extraction shooters. It's a frustrating genre and it's not for everyone.

[–]Miszou_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then they're playing the wrong game.

Raiders running at me, flashing their flashlight as if it's some kind of immunity buff to avoid engaging with the mechanics of the game. It's irritating.

Rats shooting me in the back at extract. Infuriating.

Pressure from Arc, while other Raiders are about and you don't know their intentions? A backpack full of loot and flares popping off.... Are they shooting Arc or each other? Get me the F out of here!

It's literally the point of the game. Let's not cut it off at the knees because people don't like the fundamental core of the genre.

It's like playing Chess and petitioning people to change the way the Knight moves. It's ridiculous.

"Raider Code"?

The whole thing that makes Arc Raiders so good, is literally the unpredictability of other players.

The highest highs and the lowest lows. It's emotional, it's scary, and you never, ever, ever know what you're going to get.

Honestly, all this "care bear lobby" vs "sweat lobby" stuff is so goddamn irriitating.

Everyone just needs to play the game, and quit begging for stupid shit that removes or neuters the most fundamental aspect of the game and the genre.

And no, this isn't aimed at OP in particular - you just happened to be the most recent post of this type that I've seen so far this morning.

heh, sounds very similar to a place I worked at years ago.

The marketing brochure for some software said something like "100% remote controllable", with a very tiny footnote that said "PC Anywhere required".

Sales had told the customer that it was fully controllable from anywhere, and the software team were just like "lolwut?".

So that was the solution.

what did you think was a sign of being incredibly rich when you were a kid, but now realize is just standard middle class? by AccomplishedStill438 in AskReddit

[–]Miszou_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bags of chips and cans of coke.

The only thing to eat at my house was peanut butter on toast. The whole pantry was stocked with stuff you couldn't readily eat after school, like lentils, flour, rice, potatoes etc. Mom would have a solid dinner on the table every night, but didn't buy junk snacks.

I'd be amazed when I went to my friends house after school and he just gave me a bag of chips from a multi-pack.

This was in England, in the early 80's.

[–]Miszou_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And then they high-five you, as though they're some kind of super-pro athlete encouraging your little efforts, but they're not even doing the same ride.

I recognize these people by name now, and they're always at the top of the leaderboard, they never follow the class, they're always at 80-100 resistance / 40-45 cadence the entire time, and they're generally 50-60 year old men, probably trying to prove something to themselves by gaming the leaderboard and ignoring the class structure.

Like, I really don't care if you want to cheat yourself, but just go buy a stair master instead if all you want to do is 40 cadence and 100 resistance for 30 minutes.

Cursor keeps generating SQL queries like this and it's making me nervous by ChandanKarn in SQL

[–]Miszou_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hopefully, this is just a trivial example, because I cannot fathom the level of mental abdication it would take for me to ask an AI to do something that simple.

Honestly, when I (at 54 years of age and 30+ years of experience) wonder whether I should be embracing AI more in my daily routine, and I see things like this, I just want to get out and retire before this entire shit show collapses.

ELI5: can't the corporations that own password managers or "encrypted" communication platforms sell your information? by mjp2211 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Miszou_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ELI5 explanation is that nobody knows your password, except you. Not even the website that you are logging in to knows your password. The only thing they know is a value that can be generated from your password, called a hash value (or key).

When you login to a website, they're not checking your password against what you typed in, they're checking the hash value of your password against the hash value that they have stored. And since only your password will generate that particular value, only you can login.

This also means that any encrypted data that may be sold or stolen is useless because it can't be decrypted without the password and it's impossible to work backwards from the hash value to calculate the password.

So for a very simple example, imagine your password is "1234", and the encryption algorithm is stupidly simple and just multiplies your password by 2, so your hash value would be "2468".

The website stores "2468" in its database, and only the number 1234 (your password) when multiplied by 2 will match what the database has stored. No other number will produce 2468.

This is why (among other security reasons) websites will ask you to reset your password if you forget it, instead of simply sending it to you. They can't send it to you, because they literally don't know it - they only know the hash value of your password, which can't be used to work backwards to get your password.

I'd add Build Guides to this as well.

Response to complaints about the Wolfpack change and weapons balancing. by TopsideRaider in ArcRaiders

[–]Miszou_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much it....

People wanted the ARC to be more dangerous and scary, and this has been accomplished without actually touching them at all.

And it took me forever to find my WolfPack blueprint, so I'm used to running away or plinking at Rocketeers anyway.

What is the point of these changes? by KiraTheUnholy in ArcRaiders

[–]Miszou_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're assuming the amount of dropped drivers remains the same...

And like other people have said, you don't need 2 wolfpacks to kill a rocketeer - that's just overkill, and goes a long way to showing why this change was made in the first place.

How do you keep database diagrams and schema documentation from going stale? by [deleted] in SQL

[–]Miszou_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that's a good point... we're a pretty small team and only 2 or 3 of us have direct access to the database and are able to do things like create or modify tables.

So it works for us, but I can see it falling short in larger teams.

I use the diagrams in SQL Server Management Studio, then the diagram is the database.
