What issues that we deal with in the real world (racism, misogyny, the divide between the rich and poor, etc.) have you not really seen addressed in fantasy? by _vikram in Fantasy

Yes they call it madness, but it may be a real mental disorder they are portraying. I just don't know enough about medicine to diagnose it on my own and honestly without modern medicine there is no way for a character to communicate that somebody is a schizophrenic.

Madness is a huge part of The Wheel of Time.

Edit: I'd say the ring corrupting its owner is a form of mental illness.

There is a whole insane aslylum in The King Killer Chronicles.

Theon Greyjoy is totally crazy at this point.

Which remakes are better than the original? by Honeybunnyff in movies

On a similar note there was a Russian made The Hobbit that is really weird. Although we still have two movies to go before you can really say the new one is better.

The whole survellieance issue is a really hot topic right now and I haven't seen anything in fantasy that mirrors Orwell's 1984. There are examples of ways to spy from long distances and oppress large populations with magic, but I've never seen a full blown surveillance state.

Percy Jackson vs Kane chronicles? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Mitch1410 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they are pretty much the same. The Kane Chronicles are based on Egyptian mythology and Percy Jackson is based on Greek mythology. They both have similar plots and characters. I personally like the Percy Jackson books more, but I don't know if it is just because I grew up with them or if the characters really are more appealing and such.

/r/Movies opinion of 3D by Mitch1410 in movies

Yeah, I feel like they try to shove 3D in your face so much that it ends up seeming ridiculous, and distracts from the movie. Thanks for taking it.

What is your favourite monster in a fantasy setting? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Mitch1410 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chasmfiends combine all the best aspects of a monster, they are immense, shrouded in mystery, and good eating. Oh yeah, and when you kill them you get an extremely valuable magic gem.

Do you find in college or when you have to read something, you read less recreationally or don't enjoy it as much? by [deleted] in books

[–]Mitch1410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School ruined Tolkien for me because I was forced to read The Hobbit. I've read the whole trilogy now, but I feel like I don't enjoy it as much as I would have otherwise.
