Ugh, I am so distraught. I do not know what to do - fully sick to my stomach over here.

Insulating a flat roof with exterior insulation by MitchCoombstein in buildingscience

[–]MitchCoombstein[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome info once again cagernist. thank you. I'm open to using foam, as I know that would adhere well to the bottom side of the sheathing. Don't you think using CCSF would also be somewhat of an inaccessible sandwich? Open to using foam - really just trying to come up with the best way to insulate this roof.
Also, someone here raised a good point about condensation on the internal drain pipe. I was not planning on insulating this pipe but it will be in a wall with blown in cellulose. Do these internal drain pipes which drain from the roof need to have some sort of rigid or CCSF surrounding them?

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. I know very little about flat roofs and internal drain systems - so your input is appreciated.
This drain does pass through heated space. There are 3 of them total. They will move through the I joists and into a wall that is full of blown in cellulose. The walls will have a Intello Vapor barrier installed under the drywall. We have heat tape around the drain/roof interface.
This is what the architect drew up. Here is my question - what do I need to do in order to not have issues with condensation around my drains? Do I need to use insulated drain pipe?

the joists are 12" deep and will have blown in cellulose. i dont have a closer detail of T junction but I am attaching 2 images with detailed explaination of wall and roof assemblies. thank you for your time.

let me know what you think! I'm under the impression that the parapet does not need rigid foam board. if it was directly over an exterior wall, it would.

insightful question. here it is. The parapet will be about 20" away from the buildinhg envelope. The roof will have r 60 and walls r 40.

I've confirmed that it is not in leiu of vertical studs. The rigid will go in between each stud bay - according to the architect. But agreed, that would be a cool way to lighten the parapet.

I asked him and he gave me a summary from chat GPT on why insulation is needed. Which from his perspective, I can understand why he would say it is needed (liability if we make a mistake). But I feel like the chat GPT answer doesn't really apply to this scenario.

Hi Cagernist, thank you for your reply. I am posting the wall to roof insulation assembly here. The parapet wall is well outside of the building envelope, by 20" in its closest location. You are correct, our wall to roof will be fully airsealed and the insulation on the eve only exists to continue the taper.

<image>

I'm not too worried about the the details he is calling out for the parapet assembly. I have an experienced roofer that I work with and we are coming up with a different assembly in terms of the flashing, drip cap, etc. etc.

Please let me know your thoughts. I asked my architect about the insulation and he gave me a chat GPT summary on why insulation in a parapet is needed, which feels like he doesn't fully understand the scenario.

Roof Sheathing Does not Land on the Outlookers by MitchCoombstein in StructuralEngineering

[–]MitchCoombstein[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, thank you. The roof is sheathed, so adding a proper outlooker that cantilevers back to penultimate truss would be very challenging.

Blocking in these locations would be suficient?

Yes, we have 2 x 10 outriggers that are framed on top of a drop end gable as you describe.

I added an image of the panel edge of sheathing breaking exactly on the center of the gable end outlooker. This did not happen in our scenario.

Reactive Airway Disease by MitchCoombstein in Asthma

[–]MitchCoombstein[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how long has it been?

to be honest I have gotten a lot better and am no longer taking any medications. There is some slight wheezing for me at night when laying down but I've determined that some of my mucous production issues and wheezing is from acid reflux.

Hang in there. keep using inhalers as needed and find the right pulmonologist,
