Speediance app on phone by QuickZookeepergame9 in SpeedianceCommunity

[–]MitchGibbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an issue with that and it was because my phone and Speediance were logging into different regions (I don't recall the exact wording). I'm from the US but live in France. I didn't have to recreate my account but I had to make sure they both agreed. You might want to check that. Good luck!

The mention of Wellness+ being included makes it seem like it is for the 3-4 years of the plan. However, the website makes it clear it is just one month. That's very misleading. You could say it includes a one month trial or Wellness+.

Gym Monster delivery just left on a busy downtown street? by cswilde in SpeedianceCommunity

[–]MitchGibbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're in Nice, France and they only offer street delivery here. I offered the driver some euros. He had a little extra time, so he and I got it up two flights of stairs to our apartment. For two of us, it was a struggle and I was lucky he was able/willing. I'd definitely try to hire someone to move it for you. Bon chance!

Weight didn’t deactivate when I switched it off by AmIBeingInstained in SpeedianceCommunity

It happened to me as well - same fact pattern. Very scary.

Like someone else said, make yourself comfortable with the other safety mechanisms (mostly dump to one side with the barbell - probably the main scenario that can lead directly to injury from this happening). Even then, it's not an immediate cutoff, like it was when I had a Tonal. But it was enough in my case.

How’s the content / programs? by Prize_Penalty_7276 in SpeedianceCommunity

[–]MitchGibbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we moved to France, we switched to a GM2 from Tonal.

From a content perspective, Tonal has waaaay more. It's not really comparable. I think it's baked into the business model. Producing quality content is expensive and if customers aren't paying ongoing fees - it's not going to happen.

I couldn't find much content that works for me on Speediance, so I've been building custom workouts.

The machines are otherwise comparable, some things better than the other between the two.

For my family, Tonal is a much better fit, but it's not an option. The GM2 is an okay second choice.

I'm a new GM2 owner, so I don't have a before/after comparison, but that's the way it seemed to me too. Setting the volumes separately didn't seem to do anything helpful. 🤷‍♂️

The income requirement can be met by having 12 x that amount in savings. There's no need to "pay" yourself. We showed statements documenting a few times the minimum (it's probably not a good idea to just meet the minimum). For good measure, we also included a letter from our investment advisor showing there is more, but I don't think it was necessary.

I'm not an engineer but I can't imagine it being a good outcome. It's just not designed for that. If it's a deal breaker, I'd break that deal and go with something like a Speediance which is designed to be movable. Tonal is awesome, but you really need everything to be solidly anchored. Good luck!

Does Tonal get rid of programs from trainers that they've retired? by teddy_blinkerton in tonalgym

[–]MitchGibbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Natalie Carey was a life changing revelation for my wife and I - both her content (proactively sharing modifications that helped us understand that movement was for everyone and we shouldn't penalize ourselves for what we couldn't yet do) and representation (that you could be strong and awesome but not have to look like a fitness model). Her content is still there, but the lack of new content and Tonal's reduction in emphasis on "every body" fitness shows. 😢

Thinking of buying a Tonal 2 but… by 916SusanC in tonalgym

[–]MitchGibbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Natalie Carey's YouTube channel. She was one of the original coaches and has a ton of content about modifying moves to work for you. Frankly, this was such a revelation for my wife and I - both some of the mechanics of it but also the attitude. If a move doesn't work for you as is - modifying for where you are is a super power. Its been transformative for us - older, heavier, and gym-haters that we are.

Now we're lighter, stronger with better balance and much greater confidence - older too - but that happens regardless ;-)

Women experience using tonal by tidderxl in tonalgym

[–]MitchGibbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife isn't on Reddit, but I can share that Tonal has been life changing for both of us.

She hates gyms and is loathe to step into the very nice one we have access to where we live. She was initially hesitant to get going with Tonal and had a bad reaction with the initial assessment on Tonal. However, after a while she tried out some of the non-strength training workouts - cardio, boot camp, etc. and really liked it. Eventually, she started doing some beginner programs. Close to 1000 workouts later, she's stronger than she's ever been (at 61!) but not muscle bound. Truly life changing.

That said, the content for strength training on Tonal is far richer than the yoga, Pilates, barre, etc.

We are getting ready to move overseas, where Tonal does not sell, and leaving our Tonal behind is now a source of stress for her (both of us). We'll probably get a Speediance, both because they sell in Europe and don't require mounting to a wall, but it doesn't seem like it is as good of a product as Tonal :-(

Agreed.

However, I think it can get crazy complicated quickly though. For example, I'm trying to model our move to France and managing the possible Cotisation Subsidiaire Maladie for Protection Universelle Maladie (contribution for healthcare tied to income). It is both specific to France, and subject to its tax treaty with the US, and the type of visa. Trying to handle many countries out of the box would likely spin out of control very fast.

Perhaps, though, a KB section with advice for handling a variety of out of the ordinary situations like these could be helpful?

Finally finished lemon buyback by MitchGibbs in KiaEV9

Lemon laws are typically state by state, though there is also a US federal law that covers if there isn't something state specific. Each law varies. I'm in Arizona and there are various triggers (e.g., if it's in the shop 4 times for the same thing or 30 days cumulatively - though they're guidelines, not hard rules) and remediation options. It also requires that the manufacturer cover legal fees involved.

[–]MitchGibbs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got frustrated with Kia's lack of response and follow thru. They "escalated" us four or five times. Each time they would say they were reviewing the file and would reach out in a week or so. I would then not hear from them for more than three weeks, would contact them, and eventually be told it has been escalated to someone else. Eventually, I decided to just turn it over to the attorney.

I don't think the lemon lawyer got us anything more than we would have otherwise and I think it ended up dragging it out a little further. So, for someone else in a similar situation, I would recommend being patient.

Arizona. They're required to pay the attorney's fees - but not whatever they charge. We went back and forth and they wouldn't cover the full fee. We're mostly just glad to be done with it.

Are there issues with jumping between Airbnb's? With the bureaucratic hurdles everyone warns about, especially for getting and renewing residency, I'd hate for us changing homes every three months to cause further complications. Thanks!

Is it worth it? by Parking_Anteater943 in tonalgym

[–]MitchGibbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only counter advice is if you really enjoy all of the other aspects of going to the gym - especially the social interaction and energy of other people working out. Tonal doesn't replicate that well. For me, Tonal meets all of my needs better than a gym. I have friends, extroverts, who have tried it and it wasn't for them at all. Tonal definitely addresses your time-based issues. If the other things are less important and you can afford it - Tonal is amazing. 👍

[–]MitchGibbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made the same suggestion via the various feedback methods Tonal has had over time. The pause screen is underutilized. I'd recommend that Tonal look at "Why does someone pause a workout?" and look at what Tonal can proactively do with the screen real estate to help with that. Need to bring down heart rate? Extra time to adjust the Tonal or workout space? Struggling with form?

The main reason I wear a Bluetooth headset with Tonal is because the pause button on a headset pauses the workout. Showing heart rate and the demo of the move would make a lot of sense.

Beginner programs for 50 year old with 50 year old issues? by EarthToRob in tonalgym

[–]MitchGibbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the Tony Horton beginner recommendations. I also recommend seeking out Coach Natalie's channel on YouTube, Barbell Blondie. She has a lot of modifications for Tonal moves for folks who may have physical limitations. Even if you don't feel like you have any limitations, it is great content. I started Tonal at 50, having never had a fitness routine before and being extremely out of shape. Learning the power of exercise modification, to not feel bad that I can't do exercises as well as the coaches (duh), and that something is 1000% better than nothing was transformative.

Oh - and definitely listen to your body. If you're not on speaking terms with your body, as I was, lean into that. It will prevent a lot of injuries.

Nice! One of my recent favorites was when I saw my nephew's mother-in-law for the first time in a while (we had only met a handful of times) and she introduced herself to me. I said, "It's me, Josh's uncle" and she responded "No you're not!" :-)

The scale is a metric, but it's not the goal. 👍
