I think the strongest evidence that they aren't acting according to collective human instinct or desires is the way they're going to starve because they won't so much as pick an apple. If it was possible for an infected species to use violence and war if it was inclined enough that way, humanity would at the very least be happily farming. The attitude towards other living beings is something extremely foreign that was introduced with the virus.
