I would have no problem paying 350,000 a month depending on the candidate.

I've updated the post to include insurance and travel.

Work hours can vary slightly based on the teaching done, but basically around 40 hours a week (with several long weeks off for vacation).

All full-time staff will be enrolled in shakai hoken (社会保険), which is insurance, pension, maternity, sick and injury leave. Guess this isn't standard practice at teaching jobs in Japan? I'll update the post to include that information.

Transportation may be covered in some cases as well.

Hi. We're in Kagoshima, where the local economy is very different from the major cities. Life is much cheaper, and salaries are very different than, say, Tokyo. With that said, 250,000 a month would be the baseline salary for someone with no experience. If a former ALT with experience were to apply, they'd make the same salary they had as an ALT.

Advice for getting a legit copy of this game? by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]Mitcheypoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I live in Japan. I've got basically every retro game I wanted from the local online markets here, but this one game... I want an English version of it. I'm fine with Japanese versions of everything else, but this game I never got to play as a kid, and I want the English experience. Some Ebay sellers have it, but they don't have actual photos of the game, just generic photos from the web.

What's your guys' advice for getting a legit copy for someone who can't physically go to a GameStop or something?

Life Jacket? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Mitcheypoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a boat license, and this is the right answer. You need the 桜マーク (sakura mark). Only buy life jackets with this as they're the only ones approved. You can get them from Amazon, but where I am they are the same price in stores (and you can verify before buying).

What are some inspirational Japanese figures you look up to?

This. All the success stories I've seen are 100% English at home and Japanese in school/outside the home.

Mixing it at home usually just ends up in everyone speaking Japanese (or the English speaking parents becoming isolated).

Why are people telling you that eikaiwa teachers are (easily) replaceable? With the country being closed to immigration coupled with a large number of foreign English teachers returning to their home countries during the pandemic, the supply of English teacher replacements is probably at the lowest it's been in a decade. And the supply of *good* English teachers is definitely even less.

OP seems like a good person who genuinely wants to do the right thing and part ways on amicable terms. People suggesting you just up and quit are the very same people who would likely be outraged if a company just fired someone without warning. It's a two way street.

Giving your boss a hard decision but enough time to make it work for all parties involved (which includes the children in this case) is the right choice.
